I was at Amzn in 2000 when the internet bubble popped. Capital markets dried up & we were burning $1B/yr. Our biggest expense was datacenter -> expensive Sun servers. We spent a year ripping out Sun & replacing with HP/Linux, which formed the foundation for AWS. The backstory:

The number of managers (and executives) who don't trust their people are doing the right thing is TOO DAMN HIGH! These 'leaders' need to start having compassion & focus on how they can enable others to be productive, not micro-managed.

Managers… I understand the temptation to want to track your employees’ every moment while they’re newly WFH, but I implore you to trust them to do the right thing rather than assume they’re taking advantage of the situation. Don’t look over their digital shoulder.

Yes, it's sadly the case. We're sad to have made this decision. Not because other conferences are telling us to do it, but because well-being is our top priority.
