Do you believe in open legal information? We're looking for sponsors of @big_cases and our other case bots. Your support would help buy legal docs from history-making cases, and your name would be seen by tens of thousands of legal watchers. Info here: bots.law/big-cases/sponsors/

We're redoing CourtListener's search engine in a major way. What queries have confused or confounded you? How can it be better? We've got a lot of fixes already, but now is a very impactful time to tell us how it has failed you.

We have completed adding metadata for about 125-million PACER documents to our database. The data goes back about a decade and took about six months to import. As always, it's all searchable in the RECAP Archive: courtlistener.com/recap/

Continuing my experiments with @AnthropicAI's Claude model. I have to say that I'm mightily impressed. Here, I asked the model to produce a two-part summary of the Divisional Court's 2012 decision in the Chambers v DPP (see bailii.org/cgi-bin/format.cg…)) #legaltech

I have a bunch of sketchy interface ideas for using language models as epistemic rubber ducks, aka. reflective thinking partners🐥
They've been sitting in Figma for 8 months gathering dust! They all felt too obvious to me to be worth sharing...

We have a massive opportunity to transform law and legal services to better serve society. We MUST AUTOMATE the majority of what lawyers do today so that we can expand access to the law and justice for EVERYONE in the future.
We need to have REAL discussions about the impact of technology on legal services, legal institutions, and the rule of law.
The Goldman study has a methodology: key4biz.it/wp-content/upload…
Most lawyer analyses of the impact of technology are based on anecdotes and vibes. We should discuss, critique, raise questions, do more research, etc. Dismissing without engaging with these studies is troubling.
More importantly, we're missing an opportunity to clearly articulate a mission and vision for the future! We can use computation to improve the law, legal services, and the rule of law and provide access to justice for everyone! What will be the obstacles? What data must we gather? What other disciplines must be engaged in these efforts? What skills will today's lawyers need in the near- and long-term future? How can we better prepare other legal professionals to deliver legal services? How can we design better self-help systems for individuals and people in businesses? How can we shift to a proactive mindset so that more problems can be avoided? As we automate various tasks, how can we augment people so that we retain the human elements we need and they can be fulfilled and provide significant value to others?
Technology will radically transform law, legal services, and the rule of law, because we will choose to lead that transformation and make it happen! So many ways to do the work to chart a course for a better future!
“According to Goldman Sachs, a bank, 44% of legal tasks could be performed by ai, more than any occupation surveyed except for clerical and administrative support”economist.com/business/2023/… from @TheEconomist 1/ economist.com/business/2023/…

sali-search.kelvin.legal/
So many folks have already sent us some ideas …. and again we would love to get your Feedback —
Please put comments / ideas in the comment section below … Lets call this #FeedbackFriday!
So what is THIS ANYWAY?
Well, Damien Riehl saw what we were building in the soon forthcoming Kelvin Legal OS @273Ventures and realized it would be a perfect approach to solving a thorny problem that the SALI Alliance™ faced for years. Namely, supporting the mapping of various topics / taxonomies in the legal sector to the SALI Standard. Michael Bommarito (@mjbommar) started cooking and off we go!
It is akin to some the issues you might observe with EMR (Electronic Medical Record) synchronization in the medical sector.
Also, this is a concrete demonstration of how one might leverage an LLM such as ChatGPT / GPT-3.5/ GPT-4 to help solve an important business of law problem.
In order to support to overall advancement of the Legal Sector we are OPEN SOURCING this effort ...
So once again here it is — THE SALI LMSS SEARCH TOOL … sali-search.kelvin.legal/
More to come next week …
