In India, there are 370 million people between the ages of 15 and 29. This summer, student activists began protesting corruption in the education system. The students were met with violence from Indian police and paramilitary—even when they were complying with all instructions, “they were constantly beaten, slapped with open palms, and kicked,” one participant said. Their actions have ignited a youth movement across the country, which erupted after the chief justice referred to the unemployed youth as “cockroaches.” A recent graduate responded on social media, “What if all cockroaches come together?” He then launched online, almost as a joke, the Cockroach Janta Party. Its numbers quickly swelled into the millions. Now, the Cockroach party has turned their attention to other corruptions in Modi’s government.
