39 years ago nearly to the day I was a Tufts student facing Boston police in riot gear. A few hundred of us clumped the administration building to encourage the university to divest from South African investments. That ended peacefully and I pray tonight does as well

I really love the active discussion abt the role of ethics in AI, spurred by Google Gemini's text-to-image launch & its relative lack of white representation. As one of the most experienced AI ethics people in the world (>4 years! ha), let me help explain what's going on a bit.

Nothing makes me feel more American than watching people buy the 12 pound blocks of cheddar on Super Bowl weekend.

Apparently this is in the news again, I had two separate reporters show up at my home this evening. So I'll just say here, I have a 101 degree fever, and I'm honestly not thinking about the MBTA right now. Or anything else for that matter. 🤒
Just had a terrifying experience on the MBTA Green Line. I was helping my 4 year old get off the train and my leg got trapped in the door! It happened at the Medford/Tufts station, on a car like this where you have to step down to get off... 🧵

Very cool paper on the curse of multilinguality. Those guys trained more than 10k models over 250 languages ! arxiv.org/pdf/2311.09205.pdf Cherry on the cake: they use the (Smith et al. ) citations format !!! I so want to sing their praises all day :)

One of the union leaders looked the CEO in the eye and said, “I matter, we matter and we deserve better.”

I think about that moment a lot, and what this new era of worker power means for workers.

the blue line has the opportunity to do the funniest possible thing
Orange Line: Shuttle Buses replace service between Back Bay and North Station due to an electrical problem at Downtown Crossing. The Green Line shuttles have been extended from Copley/Back Bay to North Station to accomodate passengers.

This got some attention; FYI, here's a nice piece on "Berkson's Paradox" (bias) which is related to conditioning on a collider. In fact, the first ex is abt college admissions, and "weird" induced correlations for admitted students: brilliant.org/wiki/berksons-…
But isn’t this all conditioning on a collider (here: admission to college)?

This paper is a banger. *surreptitiously crosses it off of her "open problems someone should work on" list*
🚨 [New Paper] If you're involved in AI safety or jailbreaking, you don't want to miss this: Techniques from human communication now effectively breach aligned LLMs (Llama-2 Chat, GPT-3.5, GPT-4) with over 92% attack success rate. 👇🧵(1/7 - page link: chats-lab.github.io/persuasi…)

I don't understand how something like this can happen. Was the MBTA understaffed today because of the holiday? I'd be interested to see if there is some sort of incident report, but I don't know how to ask for that.
