The misdirect here is that @GavinNewsom is opposing a WEALTH tax on billionaires in his own state & insisting he supports a new national INCOME tax on billionaires — but billionaires make money off non-income sources. Read his Substack post carefully — he’s talking about income taxes and closing a few loopholes but not a national version of the WEALTH tax on the ballot in California. So this is Newsom thinking he can fool everyone and going to bat for billionaire donors who could fund his presidential campaign.

The BBC just released a new adaptation of Lord of the Flies, the classic novel by William Golding. It's beautifully made, but it's still telling the wrong story. A few years ago, I went looking for the *real* Lord of the Flies. I wanted to know: has it ever actually happened? Have kids ever been shipwrecked on a deserted island? It took me a year of research, but I found it. In 1965, six boys from a boarding school in Tonga stole a boat, got caught in a storm, and drifted for eight days without food or water. They washed up on 'Ata, a remote, uninhabited island in the Pacific. They stayed there for 15 months, and what happened on that island was the exact opposite of William Golding's novel. These boys set up a small commune. They built a food garden, stored rainwater in hollowed-out tree trunks, created a gym with improvised weights, and built a badminton court. One of them, Stephen (who would later become an engineer) managed to start a fire using two sticks. They kept it burning the entire time. Of course they fought too. But then they argued, they had a rule: go to opposite ends of the island, cool down, then come back and apologize. As one of them told me: ‘That's how we stayed friends.’ Back home, everyone assumed that the boys – Luke, Stephen, Sione, David, Kolo and Mano — were dead. When they were finally discovered by an Australian captain named Peter Warner, he radioed their names to Tonga. After twenty minutes, a tearful response came back: ‘You found them! These boys have been given up for dead. Funerals have been held. If it's them, this is a miracle!’ Peter commissioned a new ship, hired all six boys as his crew, and named the boat the Ata, after the island where he found them. They remained friends for the rest of their lives – Peter and Mano even became soulmates. I tracked them down, and it became one of the central chapters of my book Humankind. Here's what struck me most: William Golding (the author of Lord of the Flies) was a troubled man, an alcoholic who once said ‘I have always understood the Nazis, because I am of that sort by nature.’ I think he was projecting his own darkness onto children. And we turned it into a lesson about human nature that we teach to millions of kids around the world. I think the real lesson is the opposite. When real children found themselves alone on a real island, they didn't descend into savagery. They cooperated, they took care of each other, they survived. I'm not saying that the Tongan castaways were representative of all kids everywhere. But I am saying that every kid who has to read or watch the fictional Lord of the Flies also deserves to know what actually happened when it played out in real life. Stories are never just stories. We become the stories that we tell ourselves.

Just hours after reports emerged that CBP commander Greg Bovino would be leaving Minnesota imminently, anti-ICE activists, along with other members of the community, gathered outside Bovino’s hotel. Several law enforcement agencies, including Minnesota State Troopers, county sheriffs, and local police, arrived on the scene in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Demonstrators were met with pepper balls and threatened with the use of chemical weapons, where a long-range acoustic device (LRAD) was used. Police charged the crowd and made multiple arrests. The assembly was declared unlawful — upon being asked how it was unlawful, an officer explains, “because it was declared unlawful.” 🎥 Drop Site contributor A.B. Youssef was on the ground in Minneapolis last night outside the SpringHill Suites, where Bovino was reported to be staying.

🇨🇳🧬 When China curing cancer becomes a “strategic disaster” for the U.S. 🇺🇸 This week, a moment from a U.S. podcast went viral in China and for good reason. On an American podcast called “ChinaTalk” (中国说), host Jordan Schneider invited Leland Miller, a former member of the U.S. Congressional China-US Economic and Security Review Commission, to discuss China-US tech competition. The tone was relaxed, until Schneider half-jokingly asked: “If China were the first to cure cancer, that would at least be good news for all of humanity, right?” Miller didn’t laugh, he replied seriously: “No. That would be a strategic disaster for the United States.” At that moment, the internet went quiet. Because what he really said was simple and brutal: If China cures cancer, America loses. A breakthrough that would be one of the greatest achievements in human medical history was framed, not as hope, but as a U.S. nightmare. This wasn’t a slip of the tongue. It was fear, displayed openly for all to see. Not fear of disease, but fear of falling behind. Miller later explained his logic openly: if China controlled a cancer cure, the U.S. would lose dominance. China could “control the supply chain” and America’s healthcare system, pharmaceutical industry and capital markets would take a hit. In other words: The problem isn’t that cancer would be cured, the problem is that America wouldn’t be the one profiting from it. That’s the uncomfortable truth. For decades, parts of the U.S. medical system have shifted from saving lives to sustaining profit networks. Cancer is no longer just a disease, it’s a trillion-dollar industry. Pharmaceutical companies depend on it, research institutions are funded by it and politicians raise money around it. For those interests, the real nightmare isn’t scientific progress, it’s the end of the revenue stream and the backlash inside the U.S. was immediate. Even American netizens were stunned. One comment summed it up perfectly: “Better to die of cancer than lose to China.” Another wrote: “They don’t fear China winning, they fear losing the power to play God.” Behind the sarcasm was genuine disappointment. The old American idealism, science for humanity, has been hollowed out by pure interest politics. This is what makes the moment sound so insane! The U.S. was once the country that put humans on the Moon (allegedly), launched the Human Genome Project and attracted scientists from everywhere. Now, even curing cancer can be reframed as a national security threat. Yes, anxiety plays a role. China’s research capacity is no longer theoretical. In cancer immunotherapy, gene editing and cell treatment, China is no longer just following, it’s increasingly leading. More papers, more trials, more approvals are now coming from Chinese labs. For those accustomed to “America leads everything”, that reality is terrifying. Because the deeper fear isn’t being overtaken, it’s losing the right to define humanity’s future. This thinking has been around for years in U.S. tech circles: “If we didn’t invent it, it’s a threat.” From chips to EVs, from 5G to vaccines, foreign innovation gets reframed as danger. Now that logic has reached medicine. Chinese breakthroughs don’t trigger congratulations, they trigger containment. But here’s the problem: science doesn’t respect borders and knowledge moves faster than sanctions. The louder the fear of Chinese innovation gets, the more it exposes a lack of confidence at home. Some U.S. elites no longer even pretend that science exists to serve humanity. They still talk about “freedom”, “order” and “human rights”, until profits are touched. Then the mask slips. This isn’t national security, it’s civilisational regression. Plain and simple. When curing cancer becomes a geopolitical threat, something is deeply wrong. A country that once called itself the “beacon of humanity” now fears someone else lighting the torch. If China ever does achieve a major medical breakthrough, the response won’t be celebration, it will be reframed as a “China threat to global health”. But this logic collapses in the real world. No one will reject a cancer cure and people don’t vote with flags, they vote with survival. Science doesn’t take orders from politics and human lives don’t recognise national branding either. So yes, if one day we hear that Chinese scientists have found a cure for cancer, it may give some people in Washington sleepless nights and hopefully nightmares. But for humanity, it would be one of the greatest dawns in history. America’s fear isn’t that China might cure cancer, it’s that from that moment on, the world no longer revolves around America. That tells you everything.

The imperial boomerang has truly come home. The same forces and practices violating the human rights of people in Palestine and across the global South have now been unleashed on all of us living in the West. Even as the US-Israel Axis leaves a trail of blood across the globe, here at home, people are being surveilled by the state, sanctioned, expelled from school, fired from jobs, beaten and arrested by police, abducted by ICE, deported, and slandered by the government, just for defending human rights and speaking out against the Israeli regime and its US-funded apartheid and genocide. Now a rogue federal militia is terrorizing and murdering people in the streets. We are living in the belly of a beast that threatens to devour the very idea of human rights at home and abroad. The beast is buttressed by two corrupt parties, complicit media companies, corporations, tech oligarchs, billionaires, and ruthless lobbies. Most of all, it is buttressed by the apathy, ignorance, and inaction our neighbors. The hour is late. But the victory of tyranny over justice is not inevitable. This is our 1930s moment. Read history. Find courage. Resist this.

To be clear about what this depicts: An immigration officer threw a woman onto the ground. Alex Pretti, a registered nurse on scene as a legal observer, is filming and goes to help the woman up. He is then pepper sprayed and thrown to the ground for no discernible reason. Many officer surround and assault him; one removes his firearm, which police say appears to have been legally registered. They then execute him with a hail of bullets. They are, objectively speaking, both cowards and criminals, while Pretti is what we teach people an American ought to be.

Hahahaha 😂😂😂😂 Bovino decided to look tough by throwing a gas canister at legal protestors. It takes him a few minutes to figure out the pin and then, like a total nimrod, he throws it into the wind and the gas blows back on him and his men.

Ambassador Mike Huckabee told an Israeli outlet today the war on Gaza is a battle of “Good vs. Evil.” In Gaza City, journalist Abood Abusalama captured children screaming in agony on a hospital floor after an Israeli strike on a displaced persons’ tent near the Al-Azhar intersection. Most remaining hospitals are operating at over 300% capacity, as Israel continues to systematically deprive Palestinians from adequate medical aid by blocking shipments at crossings.
US Amb. to Israel Mike Huckabee says the Israel-Palestine conflict is part of the battle of "Good vs Evil." "You you don't stand with Israel because you agree with their govt…You stand with Israel because Israel is standing for a tradition of the God of Abraham…" Insanity.
