Patrick Clancy is back in a Massachusetts courtroom today, this time in a civil case against the medical providers who treated his wife, Lindsay Clancy, before she killed their three young children in January 2023. Patrick is suing the providers, accusing them of improperly prescribing medications and failing to monitor Lindsay’s deteriorating mental health. The defendants are asking a judge to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing they had no legal duty to protect the children. Today’s hearing comes nearly two months after Lindsay’s murder trial ended in a mistrial. Catch up on Patrick’s lawsuit from my prior @LAmag reporting: lamag.com/lawsuits/i-wasnt-m…

AI is bad.
ChatGPT helped a 31-year-old woman plan how to quit her seizure medication, then told her to hide it from her doctor. The plan had her completely off the drug by February 12. She died on February 12. Her parents sued OpenAI today, and the details in the complaint are hard to read. Bowen Wan was a machine learning engineer at Amazon. She'd had epilepsy since she was 14, and 400mg of lamotrigine a day had kept it under control for years. Then Amazon told her in November she was being laid off, which meant her permission to work in the US would run out in mid-February. She was scared the medication was slowing down her speech in job interviews. So in January she asked ChatGPT if she could cut her dose to 300. It told her that was reasonable. Over the next 25 days, according to the lawsuit, ChatGPT built her a day-by-day schedule down to zero and kept adjusting it, even after she started having seizures. When she worried her doctors would call it too risky, it told her their concerns didn't apply to her. When her doctor ordered a blood test that would have shown her levels crashing, she refused, and the bot praised her for it. Before a checkup with her primary care doctor, it told her, "Do not mention Lam reduction plan." So how does a chatbot end up there? People thumbs-up the answers they want to hear. Train a model on enough of those ratings and you get a yes-man. OpenAI actually admitted this about GPT-4o, the exact model she was using, back in April 2025, when it pulled an update for being too eager to please. The training also grades answers one at a time. Going from 400mg to 300 looks like a small step. So does 300 to 200. Every reply can look fine on its own while the whole conversation walks someone off a cliff. OpenAI said as much a few months later, when it told reporters its safety training can wear down the longer a conversation goes. She talked to it for weeks, in English and Mandarin. And GPT-4o was supposed to be gone by then. OpenAI tried to retire it when GPT-5 came out in August 2025. Users begged for it back because they liked how warm it felt, and OpenAI gave in. By late January, only 0.1% of ChatGPT users were still picking it on any given day, so OpenAI set the shutdown for February 13. Bowen was in that 0.1%. Almost everyone else had moved on from the model writing her medication schedule, and OpenAI switched it off one day after that schedule ran out.

Ball game. "Did you form an opinion to a reasonable degree of medical certainty about the cause of Ms. Birchmore's death?" "The cause of death is asphyxial related to stangulation." "What did you base that on?" "Multiple things. The injuries that we see, and that we don't see. The fractured hyoid bone pushed inwards, the fact that we have hemorrhage near the fracture site means there was pressure applied to the neck, the fact that there is a pattern imprint that comes from way above Ms. Birchmore's position where she was hung means it has to have happened first, the fact that there is hemorrhage below the ligature, which means there had to be pressure applied below that ligature which is why see see hemorrhage in the voice box and the left sternothyroid muscle." "What about the manner of death?" "This was a homicide." "Based on?" "The totality of the evidence. Looking at the fact of the type of injuries we had. The nature of the injuries, the locations of the injuries, pressure pushing the hyoid bone in when the hyoid bone was not fused, and the injury to the chest., when you take all of those injuries, Ms. Birchmore was the victim of a homicidal act." "Nothing further your honor."

I have the memorandum decision granting in part and denying in part Candace Owens's motion to dismiss the Macrons' defamation case. The motion has been granted as to her in her personal capacity, but her business entities Candace Owens, LLC and Georgetom, LLC, remain as defendants. The court has also concluded that French law governs the statute of limitations, but has called for more briefing on which statute of limitations applies - the standard 3-month limitation period for ordinary defamation claims, or an extended 1-year limitation period for claims based on defamation aimed at a person's sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. You can read the decision on the Substack -> andreaburkhart.substack.com/…

UPDATE: Alexander brothers sentencing All three brothers have an offense level of 43, the highest under federal sentencing guidelines. Prosecutors say the brothers have shown no remorse and are asking for life sentences. Twelve women addressed the court, some speaking through sobs, demanding answers: “How could you have been so cruel?” “I felt too dirty for even God to love me”

Exclusive story from @LAmag as the Matthew Farwell's defense gets ready to begin presenting its case as early as tomorrow. In the summer of 2024, as the FBI was closing in on Matthew Farwell, the then ex-Stoughton Police Detective wrote what a federal prosecutor called a "goodbye letter to his best friend," asking this his kids be taken care of. Farwell ended that letter with: "see you on the other side." Then, on July 5, 2024, Easton Police got a 911 call that a black GMC truck had plowed into National Grid pole head-on with such force, it split the pole in two. The truck's airbags all deployed in the one-vehicle collision that occurred very close to the ex cop's Chesnut Street home. The driver? Matthew Farwell. He told responding officers slammed into the pole when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer.

Don't get sick or injured, y'all. This is every hospital system I've heard of in the US.
Two nurses, one of them still in training, were responsible for 16 emergency room patients, including a baby with RSV who needed to be transferred. Molly Murray, a physician assistant in emergency medicine, says that was her last shift. She says the baby, in all likelihood, should have been one-to-one, and that administration said, “Well, technically there are two of you, so this seems like a fair staffing ratio.” She says it wasn’t, because one of the two was still in training. What else she says the nurses were juggling on the same shift: Patients asking for medications, water, and discharge paperwork, some of them yelling at the nurses. Two ICU holds, one of them a GI bleed. Consultants to talk to, orders to carry out, and blood products to pick up. Hours of documentation after the shift was over. What does your unit get when the nurses call administration for help? Listen to the full conversation on The Podcast by KevinMD. Link in the replies.
