Nigeria poultry farmers are currently struggling to raise their birds due to massive increase in feed prices and the challenges associated with inflation which have been driving up cost of production nationwide.
You can become a big and successful local chicken farmer, doing sustainable agriculture and earning stable profit but you should not expect to begin to make money immediately. Give yourself a two years timeline and you will have a massive returns but don't take from the project for at least two year.
The breakdown is as follows:
1. Buy land. We are currently selling a hectare of land in Ga'ate for N2million and five hectares can be enough for 1,000 startup chickens. you can also have two hectares of cashew, one hectare of palm trees, one hectare of plantain and one hectare for chicken houses, your own residence and others. This will cost about N10million for land, About N15million to plant and manage these plantation for four years and about N25million to setup up a standard residence for yourself and the chicken. That is about N50million committed to land, plantation and basic infrastructure.
2. 1,000 female local Fulani giants chickens at N10,000 each for N10,000,000.
3. You also need 200 Male NOILERS/COCKEREL/FULANI GIANTS at about N20,000 each for N4,000,000.
4. Medication and Feeding for Two Year Comes comes at N50,000,000.
5. Total is N64,000,000 and adding miscellaneous of 20% for a total of about N80million and can escalate to N100million within the two years period considering rising cost of feed even as they are free rangers.
6. You can hatch the eggs or have a control system to Improve egg laying process and immediate reproductive approach.
i. You can hatch 7500 eggs every quarter since we be expecting above 75% laying rate conservatively and an average of 10 eggs per session for about 60,000 eggs in a 24months considering other reproductive factors.
ii. Conservatively we will Achieve 25,000 table ready local well-fed chickens in 24months for N250million gross returns selling at N10,000 per Chicken.
iii. That is a Net of over N150,000,000.

I wrote this November last year.
"Nigeria commercial farmers are quitting agriculture and running away from farming; @cenbank Governor @DrYemiCardoso is literally increasing rates when we cannot repay 9% loan rates.
Agriculture is not working because we are not being honest with the challenges in the sector. The EFCC and DSS are trying to recover what is not recoverable and the painful thing is the ignorance and sentiment dance of this administration with regards to real practical solution to the Nigeria food security challenge.
What is the harmonized interest rate for Nigeria farmers that you want to produce cheap food?
Private lending does an average of 5% monthly for 60% per annum, commercial banks do around 35% per annum, DBN is 15% per annum and CBN then was 9% annum. The average is 30% per annum.
This does not include the cost of collaterals as most farmers don't have the collateral that lenders need. This is also not inclusive of cost of consulting that is usually between 5-10% on amount raised.
This is not also the cost of paperwork, payment to external auditors, accountants who knows how to properly prepare books. So plus or minus, that is another 15%.
Take it or leave it, most Nigeria commercial farmers are doing 45% rates on loans they take to farm.
Now compare. They are competing with farmers from north America, Europe and Asia whose rates come in at maximum of 8% per annum, whose tenure is from 10years and above compared to the Nigeria farmer whose tenure is maximum of 36months. Their moratorium is from 3years and the Nigeria farmers moratorium is between 1-6months.
To add insult to injury, the Nigeria farmer is government, provide most of the infrastructure he needs including electricity, healthcare, road, dams etc. The Nigeria farmers also have to provide his own security, provides his own labour and his own machinery.
Now his competitors have government providing subsidies in all aspect of the agricultural process. From cultivation, to processing to market.
Nigeria farmers done suffer to provide an ungrateful nation food, una go dey abuse is for high food prices. Una head no fit correct!"
