✈️ END OF AN ERA: LUFTHANSA'S AIRBUS A340-600 HEADS TO TERUEL FOR STORAGE Another iconic four-engine widebody is bidding farewell to airline service! Lufthansa's Airbus A340-600 era has officially come to an end after nearly 23 years of commercial operations. The latest development sees A340-600 D-AIHX making its final journey to Aeropuerto de Teruel (TEV), Spain, on 26 Oct 2026, and D-AIHW has reached on 30 Oct 2026. A look back at the A340-600's Lufthansa journey: 🔹 1997: Lufthansa became the launch customer for the Airbus A340-600, placing an initial order for 10 aircraft. 🔹 November 2003: The airline received its first A340-600, D-AIHB, named Bremerhaven. Commercial operations began in December that year. 🔹 2003–2009: Lufthansa eventually operated a fleet of 24 A340-600s, deploying the aircraft across its extensive long-haul network. 🔹 2020: The COVID-19 pandemic brought a temporary grounding of the fleet. Several aircraft were transferred to Teruel, Spain, for long-term storage. 🔹 April 2026: Lufthansa announced the retirement of its remaining four A340-600s as part of an accelerated fleet modernisation programme. 🔹 19 October 2026: The final scheduled passenger service, LH419 from Washington Dulles to Frankfurt, marked the end of the type's commercial passenger operations with Lufthansa. 🔹 26 October 2026: D-AIHX headed to Teruel, marking another chapter in the gradual departure of Lufthansa's A340-600 fleet. What comes next? Lufthansa's fleet modernisation is increasingly centred on more fuel-efficient twin-engine widebodies, including the Airbus A350 family and Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with the Boeing 777-9 also part of its future fleet plans. However, the A340 story is not quite over. The smaller A340-300 continues to play a role in Lufthansa's long-haul operations, with some aircraft expected to remain in service into 2027 as the airline manages replacement aircraft availability. From its introduction in 2003 to its final scheduled flight in October 2026, the aircraft became a distinctive part of Lufthansa's long-haul identity.
