So happy to see this out!! 🥰🐠
Congrats to @aintzane11, @R_BetancurR and our co-authors on our new @NatureComms paper: Ecological and genomic signatures of the convergent evolution of planktivory in fossil and living reef fishes over deep time nature.com/articles/s41467-0… 1/4

1/9 Interesting study. As noted in the IFLScience piece, macroevolution is not amenable to experimental manipulation, and hypotheses about events tens of millions of years ago necessarily rely on inference. That applies equally to our hypothesis and to Brownstein et al.'s.
Tuna are truly odd fish, growing to massive size and featuring warm blood. But what made them this way? iflscience.com/did-the-dinos…

Excited to share our new paper in Science Advances! We investigated the evolution of endothermy in ray-finned fishes by integrating phylogenomics, ecomorphology, fossil occurrence, and comparative genomics across 205 marine vertebrates.

Congrats to @Liz_C_Miller for leading this amazing work on deep-sea anglerfishes! 🌊✨ With 1,092 loci & CT scans, we revealed their adaptation from benthic to pelagic habitats—rapid diversification, bigger jaws, smaller eyes, & diverse body shapes. ⬇️

Why do seahorses, goatfishes, dragonets and flying gurnards evolve differently across oceans? 🌏🐟 A new study led by Scripps researchers reveals that colonization dynamics drive the decoupling of species richness and morphological diversity. Dive in: journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10…
Paper alert 🐠!!!
We investigated the evolutionary patterns of seahorses, goatfishes, dragonets, flying gurnards (Syngnatharia) across different oceans.
journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10…
We found that the decoupling of species richness and morphological disparity between regions is primarily influenced by colonization dynamics rather than differences in speciation rates.
Huge thanks to my @FishEvoLabSIO collaborators @R_BetancurR @Liz_C_Miller @arciladk, Ulises & Carmen + Giorgio and @mwestneat

1/📢 Exciting News! Using newly sequenced sea catfish genomes, we analyze signatures of selection across three major ecological axes within this clade. Our findings identify a heightened incidence of positive selection in marine-derived freshwater lineages. 🌊➡️🐟 #genomics

1/ 🐟 Exciting discoveries in flatfish evolution! A study led by our former student Emanuell Ribeiro challenges the previous notion of convergent evolution in flatfishes and instead find support for a simpler, single-origin view
