it’s wild how quickly we’ve taken the merge for granted relative to the degree of skepticism before it happened

PSA: Teku users - next update will require Java 17! It's just been merged, so please be aware and make sure you're ready!

this is healthy & working as intended. The Ethereum PoS consensus mechanism doesn't overpay for security like PoW did.
If there are more than enough validators, low yield encourages you to put your assets elsewhere
validators are in service of Ethereum, not the other way around

I've had questions about the non finality (May) and how Teku was affected... It wasn't something I could explain briefly, but for those that are interested I've done what I could to break it down...

consistent 2 second block times is an underrated treat of the bedrock upgrade. it makes etherscan much easier to use/understand
(and ponder apps using optimism will now sync even faster 🤓)

The main purpose for an Ethereum validator is to secure the Ethereum protocol. People have to be careful here. Making money is only a secondary result. Validators are serving the Ethereum community, not the other way around.

PSA - most of the "upcoming breaking changes" teku has listed for ever are actually happening. Before the next release drops, I suggest making sure you're not using any of them.
Java 17 is still undecided, but the rest are in PR's now!

Processed about 60 billion attestation data-points of the Ethereum Beacon chain to create a map of epochs (X) * validators (Y), with 13 zoom levels, 125000x as many pixels as an HD screen...

The critical importance of Ethereum's client diversity goes unappreciated 99.9% of the time.
But it counts for everything during the 0.1% of times that something goes wrong.
Sending kudos to the heroes who build and maintain Ethereum clients 🙏

Teku v23.5.0 is now available. This is a recommended update.
Key changes:
Filters old attestations that were observed to cause problems on mainnet

Lots of people asking how much ETH was burned by yesterday's inactivity leak. Back of envelope (assumes 8 epoch leak, 65% validators offlne):
About 28 ETH (c. 0.0006 ETH/offline validator).
However, attestation rewards were zero for the duration, so that's ~50 ETH not issued.
Today the Ethereum mainnet experienced its first ever inactivity leak.
Unsure what that means? Everything you never wanted to know is right here: eth2book.info/latest/part2/i…

client diversity ftw
hard to imagine working on a system without it
not only does it bring an incredibly diverse set of characters to build, vet, and secure the specifications and implementations
but it literally saves the chain on days like today

Looks like it's time to go back to a round of beacon node performance work - 560k validators is not a joke to be dealing with vs the 20k we started mainnet with

Congrats @sigp_io! 🎉 Ethereum's client diversity has come a long way. It's arguably its greatest strength and we have been blessed to have these amazing client implementations!
