ALT Illustration of the content of a panel: Dr. Amy Hasinoff kicked off the session highlighting the shortcomings of a traditional content moderation approach, which offers some relief to victims but does not tackle the real underlying problems. Just like prison in the current criminal justice system removes the person who has done the harm from society, commercial content moderation performed by platforms is a punitive model where harmful content is simply removed. This process deprives people from understanding the conflicts. She then introduced the principles of restorative justice which take into account the needs of the person who did harm, the person who was harmed and the community. Finally she listed the conditions to apply restorative justice online: one must devote resources, support facilitators, allow openness and foster community transformation when the community has not yet integrated important values.

ALT Learning during a pandemic I've designed this course to be as flexible as possible. My aim with these policies is to help you learn as much as you can in this course despite the difficult circumstances we are in: There are no late penalties I encourage you to meet with a partner each week to discuss the course materials, but you can always participate in asynchronous online discussion instead You will keep track of your work each week and use those records to determine your own grade at the end of the semester My goal is to be extremely patient and understanding with each of you, and I hope you can try to do the same with me and with each other.
