feels like the little baby is slowly entering a new chapter of her life, one where she’s not only getting to know herself better, but also learning how to trust herself, accept herself, and treat herself with a little more gentleness.
every time i translate Yujin’s magazine interviews, i find myself in awe of how much she’s grown in the way she sees the world. reading these answers, i get the feeling that my little girl is beginning to approach life with a greater sense of calm than before. not because she’s found all the answers to life’s questions, but because she’s learning that she doesnt need to have an answer to everything straight away.
one thing that runs through all six Q&As is not how Yujin talks about success, major milestones, or the kind of person she wants to become in the eyes of the world. instead, she talks about things that seem so small at first glance. being around her family and friends, holding on to that sparkle in the eyes when someone gets to do something they love, establishing her own principles and learning to cherish moments while they’re still here, in the present. i think these are precisely the things that make Yujin all the more precious. because when someone begins to recognise the value in ordinary things, perhaps they’re also starting to understand what truly matters to them.
“i’ve learned to embrace even the parts of myself i once wanted to turn away from”
perhaps this is one of the most genuine expressions of what it means to grow up. sometimes, growing up simply means being able to look back on a difficult period of your life and realise that no matter how much you struggled back then, you were still deserving of love. it means no longer blaming your past self for not being strong enough, wise enough or capable of fully appreciating the happiness you had. instead, you begin to understand that, at the time, you were simply doing the best you could with what you had.
i also really love the way the baby talks about finding her way back to herself through the people who make her feel the most comfortable. for someone who spends so much of her life in the public eye, where every expression, word and action can become something for others to scrutinise, having a space where she doesnt have to try to be anyone other than herself must be incredibly precious. i find it so lovely that the things she longs for can be as simple as visiting the Han River on a beautiful day, spontaneously going on a hike or spending time with old friends. these wishes are so ordinary that they hardly need an explanation, yet they make me realise that behind the image of Yujin, who always seems so energetic and confident, there’s still a little girl who treasures the chance to slow down, feel at ease and simply enjoy her life.
and perhaps what makes me happiest is that she still wants to hold on to that sparkle in her eyes whenever she gets to do something she loves. i’ve always thought that for someone who has spent so many years in a highly competitive industry like entertainment, holding on to that initial excitement isnt always easy. when something that once brought you joy becomes your job, when the things you love begin to come with expectations, responsibilities and outside judgement, its easy to unconsciously lose sight of that original spark aka the feeling that first drew you to it all. thats why knowing that Yujin is conscious of how much she wants to preserve that feeling warms my heart. hope my little girl will always be able to look at the things she loves with that same sparkle in her eyes, no matter how far she goes down the path she’s chosen.
oh, another thing i particularly appreciate is the way Yujin talks about having her own standards. she admits that although she’s always had her own principles, she used to think she shouldnt be too certain of them. i find that thought really worth reflecting on. when we’re young, its easy to be swayed by other people’s opinions. sometimes we know what we want, yet still hesitate because we’re afraid our choices might not be accepted. but as time goes by, what matters isnt becoming rigid or believing that we’re always right. its learning to build a set of values strong enough to guide our own decisions while remaining willing to listen, learn and grow. i feel like the baby is gradually finding that balance. understanding what she values, recognising what feels right for her and having the courage to take responsibility for the choices she makes.
what particularly stays with me is her answer about the kind of person she believes remains admirable as time goes by. someone who knows how to love others. she talks about love, warmth and the kind of thoughtfulness that comes naturally when you genuinely care about people. perhaps, in the end, what makes someone truly precious isnt just what they’re capable of achieving, but also how they make the people around them feel. i dont think we can understand everything about Yujin from a single answer, of course, but i love that these are the qualities she chooses to highlight when talking about someone she admires. it tells me that kindness is something she truly values.
and then, somehow, all these thoughts come together in her final answer. ”the freedom to pursue the things i want to do without hesitation.” i love that she doesnt say she wants to become someone who never feels afraid, but someone who can still find the courage to act. because freedom doesnt necessarily mean living without any limitations. sometimes, it means refusing to let fear, expectations or other people’s opinions decide how you should live your life. hope my baby will always hold on to that freedom, not only in her career, but also in the deeply personal choices she makes throughout her life.
i get the feeling that the baby is learning how to live a life that truly belongs to her. a life where she can love others without forgetting to take care of herself, where she can listen to the people around her while still trusting the principles she’s chosen to live by, where she can look back on the past without endlessly blaming herself for what has already happened, where she can enjoy the present without feeling the need to turn every moment into an achievement. and where she can look towards the future with excitement, even without knowing everything that awaits her.
i think there’s something especially beautiful about 23 yo Yujin. not because 23 is an age at which someone should have everything figured out, but because there’s still so much unfolding, so much left to learn and so many different versions of oneself waiting to be discovered. Yujin still has such a long road ahead of her and i dont wish for her to become someone more perfect in everyone else’s eyes. i simply hope she continues to understand herself a little better, learns how to protect the things she holds dear and never loses her excitement for life simply because she has to grow up.
because, at the end of the day, what i wish for isnt just to see An Yujin become a better idol/artist, achieve greater success or be loved by even more people. i also wish she gets to become a little girl who is genuinely happy with the life she’s living, someone who still has that sparkle in her eyes when she talks about the things she loves, who always has places to return to and people around whom she can be entirely herself, and who never loses the courage to choose the things that make her heart flutter.
i wish that many years from now, when my dearest baby girl looks back on these years of her youth, she’ll be proud not only of everything she’s achieved, but also be able to smile knowing that she truly lived, truly loved and never lost sight of herself along the way to becoming the person she wanted to be.
