Cristiano Ronaldo agreed to wait for €19,548,333 of his salary so Juventus could survive COVID. The promise to pay him back sat in a secret letter. Six years later, he has half.
In the video below, recorded the day Juventus paid €100,000,000 for him, he says why he chose them.
During COVID, stadiums were empty. Juventus asked its players to give up part of their pay.
On official forms, Ronaldo signed a waiver. In a separate letter, sporting director Fabio Paratici promised the money would come back on official paper by July 31, 2021, Corriere della Sera reported.
Only Juventus signed that letter. It never made it into the club's accounts.
August 2021: Ronaldo leaves for Manchester United. The money never arrives.
Turin prosecutors went looking for the letter. On a wiretap, Juventus' head of legal Cesare Gabasio called it "that famous paper that, in theory, shouldn't exist."
2023: Ronaldo goes after his €19,548,333. April 2024: an arbitration panel finds no fraud, but orders Juventus to pay half.
January 2026: a Turin court throws out Juventus' appeal. "Juventus failed to honor the agreement," his lawyers said.
Juventus took it to Italy's Supreme Court anyway. The hearing date is still open.
Today Ronaldo retired from Portugal after 234 games. His case with Juventus is still not over.
The case for Juventus: he signed the waiver on official forms, the club was losing money with no fans, and the arbitrators split the blame 50-50.
