Tamil has the earlier written evidence and older surviving literature.
Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions date from the late 3rd/early 2nd century BCE. Sangam literature (including Tolkappiyam) survives from roughly the 1st century BCE–3rd century CE.
Kannada’s earliest full inscription is the Halmidi record, c. 450 CE. Its oldest surviving literary work is Kavirajamarga from the 9th century CE.
The two are sister languages that branched from a common South Dravidian ancestor; Tamil simply has the earlier attestations.
