Kudos to Pope Leo. I am disturbed by how some of my fellow AI researchers keep trying to elevate the moral standing of checkpoints and harnesses. I hope the rest of us on Team Meatbag reject this movement and stay focused on solving real problems and helping actual humans.
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

Friends have told me over the last 6 months that inference is profitable.
That means:
Model houses might not lose that much on their subscriptions, if they lose anything at all.
Model houses can't just run inference. They're in a race and if they stop they'll die. They need to build the next model.
API prices then have high margins and subsidize the development of the next generation of models.
I think if the race were to stop today, then prices wouldn't go up.

This matches my own experience with GPT-5.3-Codex – I basically only run it on xhigh nowadays for all coding tasks. With all the speed improvements too, it doesn't even feel that slow, even at `xhigh`.

Go deep on niches that pull you in. If you open PRs on an OSS repo, respect the maintainer's time and don’t submit slop - your PRs should be tight, human reviewed and manually tested. Focus on shipping useful stuff that provide value to others.

The best part? It comes with a new visual indicator for pace, so you don't have to read anymore to see if you're vibing too fast or too slow.

"Codex has allowed me to put much more energy towards the higher-level work, without getting bogged down by the minute details.":
It’s been a couple of months since I read @steipete’s earlier post and decided to give Codex a try.
It clicked. My process has changed more than it has in the decade before, and I couldn’t be happier.
I started writing code because I wanted to make apps for iPhone and Mac. It has never been the end goal, but a tool.
Codex has allowed me to put much more energy towards the higher-level work, without getting bogged down by the minute details.
For the first time ever, I can do things as fast as I expect to. For the first time ever, I have time and energy to put into side projects.

CodexBar 0.12 is out! I iterated on this for hours. Found the menu entries to cluttered until I got the idea to make the entries submenus. Ofc that was tricky to place the > chefron, I had to tweak the highlight to not be bright-blue; added a bar for credits, a buy shortcut, and credits use is now a chart instead of a basic list. It's all about the details.
Also, I did hide the "Check for updates" entry - that happens in the background now, only when an update is available I show a "Click to restart" entry.
Oh and the new Buy Credits button opens a window and automates the page to directly get you to the Stripe checkout. codexbar.app
I ended up rewriting a minimal (<1000 LOC) version of ccusage into codexbar and made parsing ~20x faster + added a tiny cache to make this efficient across restarts. Still sweating some details, coming later today.
For heavy users, cost data should now appear within 30 seconds instead of ~10 minutes.

Every tool and device has their opinion. Each of them influence you in their ways. They make certain actions easy and others annoying.
Yes everything has a tradeoff. Very flexible system offers a lot of choices to make, but less guidance. Opinionated system offers guidance and less choices to make.
The reason people or businesses buy opinionated or built systems is the same reason people buy buildings, cars, iPhones, or sandwiches. Someone made the choices and they can benefit from those choices, get the benefits quickly and move on to what matters most to them, the work or realizing their goals or just going one A to B.
The economy and productivity will grind to halt if everyone is doing everything from sandwiches to software from scratch.
Everything has opinions or conventions even down to programming languages to machine code.

Recommended reading. Glad I'm not alone in thinking that long threads are bad. Which is also why I was hesitant adding compaction. It's an antipattern imo. This won't change as long as model architectures for long context windows continue to be smoke and mirrors.
My teammate @lewis_b_metcalf wrote about why he loves short threads in Amp and how he manages them.

I won’t cease to repeat it. Today, SwiftPM is a package manager that has accidentally been used as a project by the community, and therefore some of its design decisions don’t make it a good substitute of static Xcode projects. At least if you care about the DX of your team.
Now, the fact that it works, doesn’t mean it’s the best tool for the job at a certain scale. No matter how much you dream that’s the case, as I was discussing with someone over LinkedIn not so long ago. I don’t know what project he was using, but we see many examples at Tuist, and the same story keeps repeating.
I went full into SwiftPM, and I regret it.

This day marked the official closing of the formal integration process between Finnish Defence Forces and NATO military structures.
The process has been very fast. Our almost 30 years of close cooperation and military interoperability with NATO has made that pace possible.
