Hey Antarctic volcano people, if you are heading to #vEGU2021 here is a good session to submit to: meetingorganizer.copernicus.… Remember EGU is online this year, so the logistics are easier from anywhere in the world! The submission deadline is in a week (13 Jan).

Thermal structure and heat flux of the Antarctic lithosphere By Haeger C, Kaban M, Petrunin A #SCAR2020 10/10 Enjoy!
#SCAR2020 is now fully online and free to attend! Sign up at the link below, and keep an eye out for the talks about antarctic volcanism and related topics! scar2020.org/
Not all inhabitants of Antarctica love the cold. Schultz et al. map the genome of a heat-loving (50°C/120°F!) bacteria living on antarctic volcano Deception island. This bacteria might have uses in bioremediation of hydrocarbons. Quite a find! mra.asm.org/content/8/40/e00… #antvolc

Deception Island, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. Figure from Geyer et al. 2019 shows the donut like shape of the island with many recent craters. So how can we understand what is happening to the magma underneath this volcano? #cryosphere #Antarctica

Finally, why not measure deformation directly using GPS stations? Here Rosado et al., 2019 capture an episode of inflation, with the centre of the volcano uplifting and bulging outwards.

The hope is that all these techniques can be used to better understand the system and forecast future eruptions. A lot of people (scientists, logistics teams, tourists) come through the area so any large eruption could be very dangerous.
