Wise words from @YODELAGARZA. Patching the eMudhra certificates and the two php vulnerabilities took me a few hours yesterday. Dozens of python projects needed certifi updates.
Patch or Die! Today we sent the following out to the CEOs in our portfolio regarding the widespread vulnerabilities that have been detected by AI agents: The previous week should make it obvious that things have changed. Vulnerabilities are being discovered and exploited at a rate that has never been seen before. While there has been a flood of new vulnerabilities AI agents are being adopted at scale multiplying the potential risk. Agents not only help automate the attacker lifecycle, every ai agent is an insider threat. Your environments are designed to withstand attacks from the outside, not from within. As such, we are suggesting company leaders consider the following changes: 1 - Ensure you're sufficiently staffed for security. The average enterprise allocates roughly 10% of its tech spend to security. Consider doubling that. There are likely thousands of vulnerabilities that need fixing in your environments. Security through obscurity no longer works, all that can be exploited will be exploited. 2 - Establish a zero tolerance policy for secuirty bugs in new features and product releases. Re-examine launch and release schedules and consider delays to ensure all vulnerabilities are patched before deploying new features or products. 3 - Double tap the zombies. Find all old legacy environments that have been neglected and turn them off. Labs, test environments, zombie CI/CD projects etc. Turn it off for now. If it isn’t tied to revenue, kill it. 4 - End the risk acceptance process. Over the last 10 years the risk acceptance process has morphed from a way to accept risks to enable the business, to a way to justify never fixing security issues. Adopt a zero tolerance policy for security issues and risks.

I have a new magic quadrant for you :) @Gartner_inc
“At the moment, we have more compute capacity than we have demand [...]” Ok @Gartner_inc, this is nonsense. We are *massively* compute constrained. Our portfolio companies are struggling to find capacity. Full article here: cnbc.com/2026/10/19/gartner-…

AI video has gotten SO good - but the sound often doesn't pass the Turing test. Many models generate unnecessary music, exaggerated sound effects, or audio not grounded in the scene. @MireloAI's new SFX model fixes this! You get realistic audio while preserving speech 👇
AI Videos finally sound real. Introducing Mirelo SFX 2.0. It watches your video, cuts the music you never prompted, keeps the dialogue, and builds a full sound design synced to the action and consistent across any length clips. You’ve made it look right. We’ll make it sound right. Live today through our API, on @runwayml and @fal. Other platforms coming soon. (Thread)

Great session with Pat, Raghu and I had a ton of fun grilling him on the future of silicon, data centers, energy and AI.
"Energy Capacity = Economic Capacity" Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger on why America's power grid is the ceiling on growth: "We went through 10 to 15 years where essentially I was taking coal offline at the rate I was adding renewables, and essentially the nation was flatlined in terms of overall energy capacity." "So essentially our economic capacity as a nation, flat for fifteen years." "Even with that, we've gone to maybe increasing our national energy capacity 4% per year. Going from essentially zero to one." "Nuclear as base load is a fabulous thing that we want to go build more of. Unfortunately all of our renewables have deep dependencies in China." "Energy capacity somewhat dampens how euphoric we can get on AI. Why build a new data center and buy the million GPUs if I can't power them?" @PGelsinger @RaghuRaghuram @appenz

I don’t normally write these things. But this one hits a bit different. Nearly three years ago I told a16z I wanted to spend part time outside the firm helping @drfeifei start and build a frontier model company. And what followed were some of the most remarkable moments of my career. From being at the founding table. To watching the first git commits. Seeing the very early very rough results that hinted at something much greater. Contributing to the open source. Watching the creation of new model architectures that pushed the state of the art in multiple areas. I saw the team spin magic from nothing again and again. And I was very privileged to be within the walls. I’m very proud of what was accomplished, and am so excited for what lies ahead. So congratulations to AMD for entering into an agreement with the leading spatial intelligence frontier lab. And congratulations to the World Labs team on a partner that has the vision, ambition and leadership to be the top AI technology provider globally. Also congratulations to Dr. Su and Dr. Li. Two world class CEOs with a common vision. The both of you working together is unimaginably legendary. Arguably the smartest leaders in tech with the shared goal of building the world's leading AI capabilities. I know you both share an optimistic view of AIs ability to aid humanity. We need far more of that. As everyone knows. I’m World Lab’s biggest fan. And will remain so. Thanks to @drfeifei , @BenMildenhall , @jcjohnss and the entire team for letting me tag along. What a crazy fucking ride. You stood at the frontier, and moved it. And will continue to. Again, many congratulations to everyone involved. The future of AI will be so much brighter with this partnership. I can’t wait to see where it leads. Here’s to new worlds!

TypeSafe AI's Diogo Almeida with a16z's Ben Horowitz and Martin Casado on Jev, the model built to live inside software: Diogo's elevator pitch for Jev is a simple question - where is all the automation? AI is unbelievably smart, but outside of chatbots and coding agents, it hardly touches any real work. His diagnosis is the industry built models that generate text for humans to read, and software can't consume that output. Jev reads natural language and returns a choice from a set of options with a confidence level assigned to each, so developers can build programs that reason about intent and make probabilistic decisions rather than relying on human interpretation. TypeSafe's philosophy is "We build prod, not God." 0:50 "Where the f**k is all the automation?" 2:50 Jev vs. Claude Code and Codex 6:55 Jev is a classifier and classifiers are sick 7:40 Chat vs. code: is Jev a slider? 9:00 Diogo: From mathlete to Kaggle to OpenAI 12:20 "We build prod, not God" 15:55 Reliability over demos 16:55 2021 thoughts: RLHF is AGI? 20:45 Optimizing for the wrong use case 21:50 Is the real world too messy to automate? 25:00 Nobody expected the Jev launch 26:35 Three kinds of reliability 28:05 Good at syntax, bad at architecture 30:00 The inverse SaaSpocalypse 33:40 Why coding agents automate so little 36:05 Probabilistic programming returns 38:45 Jev as the UDP-to-TCP layer for AI 40:20 The 5 stages of grief for embedding AI 41:30 Utopia: AI that actually does what you mean YouTube: youtu.be/Ut3LOjKNJaE @CompleteSkeptic @typesafeai @bhorowitz @martin_casado

It's kind of ridiculous that you can get a model that is competitive with early 2026 frontier models for under 1.5 cents per million tokens. LLmflation is real. And go @relace_ai!
Relace is now also the cheapest provider of DeepSeek v4.1 Flash on OpenRouter. Agent traces are 96%+ input tokens, so GPU utilization is dominated by prefill time. However, most of those tokens are not relevant for the next response. The encoder/decoder split allows you to use a lossier, cheap submodel for prefill without affecting the performance of decode (i.e. quality of responses). It also means you need to shuttle KV between GPUs a lot, which is why they redesigned attention (again) and made the KV 4x smaller. Fully taking advantage of the theoretical gains is a deep engineering problem that DeepSeek left as an exercise for the reader.

Starlink is great for attending Zoom calls from the cockpit*. (*) Only recommended for part 91 in planes certified for single pilot ops.
Ten years in VC and I'm still having new experiences - like someone joining a Zoom while FLYING a plane. Never a dull day at @a16z infra, thanks to @Starlink for powering @appenz 🫡
