Fascinating paper from @apples_dan et al! Critically endangered regent honeyeaters sing simplified songs, reducing their reproductive success. As these songs have become more common, though, a frequency bias has kicked in and they are becoming attractive: royalsocietypublishing.org/d…

The Regent Honeyeater is so rare its love song is at risk of being lost forever. But there’s new hope the critically endangered bird can be brought back from the edge of extinction through science, tech and a whole lot of human love.

As a Hymenopterist, finding a nesting agg. of Homalictus bees in my frontyard was beyond exciting! As a Mutilliologist, finding an undescribed sp. of mutillid parasitising said aggregation was beyond-beyond! Look at how they take turns guarding the nest-entrance between flight 😍 – at Canberra, Australian Capital Territory
Haven’t been able to do fieldwork for some time now, but I did get a chance to look through some photos of my last visit to Tas with @WaspGoblin. Shame about the low light on the pink robin
@teamswiftparrot i have one of a swiftie.. but it was outside a hungry jacks in Canberra, not the most glamorous shot

The regent honeyeater is still in the race for #BirdOfTheYear.
The critically endangered bird is losing its "song culture" & if they don't learn to sing a sexy enough song, their chances of mating are reduced.

It would cost 0.1% of GDP each year to restore every habitat type in Australia to 30% of its original extent - more support for NRM bodies and land managers is urgent – at Brisbane, Queensland

In recognition #ThreatenedSpeciesDay I would like to acknowledge the dedicated #RegentHoneyeater researchers who Ive had the privilege to work with these past few years in our effort to save the species from the brink of extinction @apples_dan @CratesRoss @PitcherBen @tarongazoo

Taronga is also reminding #RegentHoneyeaters how to tweet! Their song has been changing, perhaps due to small fragmented populations &reduced opportunity to learn from adults. Taronga keepers began playing songs to juvenile birds to teach them the right ones to sing. #ScienceWeek
