It is time to formally recognise that areas in and around construction sites are hazardous. Time for a mandatory third-party liability insurance for building projects, with coverage proportionate to the project's scale, height, location and risk profile? @Arch_KE #MulikaMjengo

Juxtaposing urban sanitation and aesthetics between Tokyo and Nairobi reveals two paradigms of urban planning: Tokyo operates on friction-free seamlessness, while Nairobi operates on community-led adaptation. All public spaces and infrastructure in Nairobi are contested. – at Nairobi, Kenya

Tokyo (Sanitation as Public Hospitality): Public sanitation is an extension of Omotenashi, the Japanese philosophy of selfless hospitality. Facilities are designed to blend into or elevate the surrounding public space – at Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi (Sanitation as Defensive Provision): Public sanitation facilities, whether municipal toilets in the CBD or community-run units like Fresh Life in informal settlements, are built around security, territorial management, and cost recovery. – at Nairobi, Kenya

What does remuneration and employment look like across Kenya’s built environment professions? The anonymous AAK Salary Survey 2026 seeks to answer this by capturing data on salaries, employment conditions, staff benefits, and workforce trends across the profession. The findings will provide valuable industry benchmarks and strengthen evidence-based advocacy, policy development, workforce planning, and initiatives aimed at improving professional practice. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. All responses will remain strictly confidential, with findings anonymized and presented only in aggregate. Your participation matters. Help AAK build a stronger evidence base for a more competitive, equitable, and resilient built environment by filling in the survey here: forms.cloud.microsoft/r/fajq…

In Singapore 8 in 10 people live in public housing and over 90% are satisfied. If we are to emulate them we need to design neighbourhoods, not just houses. instagram.com/reel/DddusJxPJ…

Just look at the pedestrian infrastructure, dusty, treeless so that people prefer to walk on the carriage way. Walking is a means of transportation and should be accorded a proper place in roadworks planning @KeNHAKenya @KURAroads
Kenyans are now choosing to walk from town to Kangemi and other areas because a route that used to cost KSh 30 is now going for KSh 150. From KSh 30 to KSh 150… at this point, walking is the new public transport.

Today, the @aak_tpc, @aak_arch & @LandscapeArchKE , together with the Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC), visited the Kamukunji site as part of the ongoing Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme. The visit highlighted the important role of local communities in shaping, sustaining and taking ownership of regenerated public spaces. Meaningful community engagement is vital to ensuring that these interventions respond to local needs and create inclusive, resilient spaces for all. This tour is a prelude to the Nairobi Biennale happening from 7th to 12th of September. Join us in a few days as we continue the site tour to City Carton and Dandora. Visit biennale.aak.or.ke/

HOW CAN Engineers Board of Kenya @EngineersBoard not have a functioning board for over a year? What level of incompetency is this? Having a properly functioning board is the very least government needs to do for the young engineers. And as I have always said, retire all the wazees in EBK pronto. Give them good packages and let them go home. This sector today requires fresh undiluted perspective and ingenuity to progress it.
