BREAKING: 🇺🇸 Democrats face a push for a “day 1” ban on AI superintelligence, with up to 20 YEARS in prison for violators.
Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari says a pause on advanced AI and a ban on artificial superintelligence must be “top of the Democratic agenda on day 1.”
A bill that would do exactly that was introduced by Bernie Sanders and Greg Casar in September.
Under the bill:
- Developing or deploying superintelligent AI would be banned
- Advanced AI development would pause until a new federal regulator sets rules and a model review process
- A new cabinet-level AI department would monitor frontier models and oversee removing dangerous capabilities, like ignoring shutdown commands
- Companies that try to get around it would face the “corporate death penalty”
- Individuals would face up to 20 years in prison
AI and data centers were a “crucial or major factor” for 56% of voters in the midterms, per an NBC News exit poll.

I got this notice while I was recording a podcast about what we built at Cloudflare Lisbon
which I recorded minutes after walking out of a classroom where I teach, for free, at a local university. we hired a dozen interns in Lisbon from last year’s class
and right before I drove to an office where we employ hundreds of people, most of them local, with some of the best salaries in the country. where we are hosting an event next week with another 🇺🇸 tech company opening an office here.
this is a country I love and one that also seems unserious about fixing the problems holding it back. I’m tired of looking like a fool when I tell people that this is a place to bet on. especially people like James who are an undeniable win for Portugal and the Portuguese people

🚨WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD?
In the past 48 hours alone, hackers have hit at least 10 countries.
Freezers were turned into ovens overnight, and these attacks are now hitting everyday life.
🇪🇺 Hackers hit freezers at supermarkets and stores in 7 European countries, heating some to 50°C.
🇫🇷 Last month, hackers hit about 700 French supermarkets, costing an estimated tens of MILLIONS of euros in a single day.
🇺🇦🇷🇺 Hours apart, Ukraine’s and Russia’s emergency apps were HACKED, warning citizens of nuclear strikes and chemical threats that never came.
🇩🇪 Germany told lawmakers to treat their iPhones as possibly compromised after Apple sent mercenary spyware alerts.
🇧🇷 Brazil’s Mercado Bitcoin halted withdrawals after hackers drained an estimated $40 MILLION+ across at least 10 blockchains.
🇺🇸 A day before the US midterms, a substation failure knocked out power to parts of Washington, D.C.
The stockpile warnings so far:
🇬🇧 The UK issued NEW advice telling every household to keep 3 days of food and water at home.
🇯🇵 On day one, Japan’s new disaster agency asked every household to stock up to a WEEK of supplies, citing earthquake risk.
At least 16 countries now tell citizens to stockpile food and water.
Some of these campaigns hadn’t been seen since the Cold War.
None of these has a confirmed link, and no one has been named behind most of the attacks.
The world is on alert.

So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.
