I'm pleased and excited to announce my next book, realized with my friend and co-author Davide Sivolella and with the forewords of Felix Schlang:
Privatizing SpaceIt
It will be released by Springer-Praxis the next July.

SpaceX will attempt to catch both the Super Heavy booster and Starship on the upcoming flight.
If both are successful, it will mark the first time that all parts of an orbital rocket return to Earth intact.
This is the critical breakthrough needed to make life multiplanetary.
More than a dozen flight tests and years of development, with countless hours worked by SpaceX engineers and technicians, all come down to this: the first orbital Starship launch carrying advanced Starlink satellites bound for space.

Missile Row is waking up! It seems like Stoke Space has been granted access to develop a second launch pad, which looks to be at LC-15, according to the photo!
We're excited to announce that Stoke has been granted Right of Entry (RoE) from Space Launch Delta 45 (SLD 45) to the property just north of our existing SLC-14 launch site.
This expansion will enable the construction of a second launch site to support high-cadence launch and re-entry operations for our Nova launch vehicle. The RoE is the first step to opening more of the Eastern Range to fully and rapidly reusable launch, and we're grateful to SLD 45 for their support.

BREAKING: The FAA proposed three new rules today that could help SpaceX fly Starship more often.
• More flexibility in flight:
Operators could turn a rocket’s abort system off for one phase and back on later if FAA safety conditions are met.
• Clearer rules for mandatory aborts:
The FAA would clarify how operators assess public risk to determine when a flight must be aborted.
• A new way to assess reentry debris:
Operators could account for how a vehicle breaks apart during an uncontrolled reentry to show that debris is unlikely to cause multiple casualties in one incident.
• One final rule makes minor technical corrections to existing commercial space regulations.
• The FAA is hiring aerospace engineers to speed up license reviews and plans to begin a full licensing overhaul in 2027.
October’s package focused largely on licensing paperwork. Today’s proposals cover flight aborts and reentry safety.
SpaceX already leads U.S. launches. It has separately proposed raising Starbase’s limit from 25 to 100 Starship launches a year in the first phase of its expansion plan.

9.7 picokelvin (pK)! This is definitely the coolest experiment ever and exactly why we need space stations. They enable research like this that is difficult or impossible on the ground.
Cooling atoms near absolute zero stretches their de Broglie wavelength to observable scales — hundreds of micrometers — and sharply increases the cloud’s coherence. Quantum behavior then emerges as a directly visible and controllable form of matter. That’s a platform for frontier research in quantum mechanics.
Century-long challenge, still advancing.
In the ultracold-atom physics experiment cabinet aboard the China Space Station, researchers have cooled a rubidium atom cloud to an equivalent temperature of 9.7 pK using all-optical trap. A new record for the lowest temperature achieved in artificial matter.
Microgravity is essential: the required trapping potential is extremely shallow, evaporative cooling is more efficient, lower temperatures are reachable, and free-evolution times are longer.
The experimental path was (1) all-optical confinement, (2) forced evaporative cooling by controlled reduction of trap depth/intensity, and (3) non-adiabatic expansion for the final temperature drop to 9.7 pK, with the cloud remaining observable for 7 seconds.

6 November 1945. A Ryan FR Fireball, which used a piston engine during take-off and landing, experienced a piston failure on final approach. US Navy Ensign Jake West started the jet engine and performed the first (unintentional) jet-powered carrier landing aboard USS Wake Island (CVE-65).
