Taking care of the future of our past: it's a dirty job, but someone has to do it. I, with early music. “Humankind cannot bear very much reality” (T.S. Eliot)

I am interested in the connection with the Venetian painter G.B. Piazzetta, whose sfumato and chiaroscuro I greatly admire; they inspire me in the production of sound and its infinite possible inflections #historicalviolin

In the stunning setting of the Royal Chapel of São Miguel, I will be playing and conducting the Camerata Joanina in an all-Italian programme that will illustrate the evolution of orchestral forms through masterpieces by Torelli, Corelli, Vivaldi, Tartini, Sammartini and Nardini.

A rare etching and burin engraving by the Dutch artist Jan Miense Molenaer (Haarlem, c. 1610–1668), depicting musicians and a drinker in a tavern/brothel. It warns the viewer against the dangers of drunkenness, frivolous music in bad company, lust and frequenting brothels.

In the spring of 2022, a violent storm caused a large branch of one of the centuries-old acacia trees in our garden to snap and fall to the ground. Now, several years on, Marie-Eve Geeraert has made me a bow from that wood which is wonderfully suited to the early repertoire!
