Robert Downey Jr and Pedro Pascal dressed as Mr. Fantastic and Dr. Doom together for Halloween.

Back in 2004, years before Iron Man launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. actually walked into 20th Century Fox’s offices to audition for the role of Victor von Doom in Tim Story’s 2005 Fantastic Four. Jon Favreau later revealed that early meetings for Tony Stark were made possible only because Marvel and Fox executives remembered Downey's fierce audition tape as Doctor Doom, a role that ultimately went to Julian McMahon. Two decades later, Downey coming full circle to put on the iron mask is literal studio destiny.
Pascal’s road to Reed Richards was equally chaotic. Marvel Studios cycled through nearly every leading man in Hollywood to anchor The Fantastic Four: First Steps, actively pursuing Adam Driver, Jake Gyllenhaal, and even Matt Smith. When talks stalled and scheduling conflicts cleared, director Matt Shakman locked in Pascal, pairing Hollywood's hottest late-blooming leading man with the genre’s founding father.
Now, with both stars currently filming the high-stakes climax of Avengers: Doomsday, the two celebrated Halloween by pulling off a meta character swap. Instead of wearing their own identities, Downey suited up in Reed Richards’ blue four-striped suit and a matching mustache, while Pascal draped himself in Doom’s green tunic and hooded mask.
Dropping the clip online with the deadpan caption "Victor. Richard. Costume swap!", the duo poked fun at their characters' legendary comic book rivalry. For two characters built on petty academic resentment and clash of egos, watching the actors playfully steal each other's wardrobes turns decades of comic history into the ultimate inside joke.

there's something so sinister about how the entertainment industry keeps putting out all this "forgive your abuser" and "evil people are just damaged" propaganda. she kidnapped her because her hair kept her young. that's it.

After the Second World War, the German theorist Hannah Arendt suggested that totalitarianism takes root in societies where lots of people feel unnecessary or unwanted. In the years after 2016, it was common for the media to report on underemployed people in the Rust Belt who felt that they’d been cast aside. Today, manosphere ideology rages against a society that, allegedly, claims not to need men, and young people wonder whether there’s room for them in an A.I.-saturated workforce. “We have a real need to be needed,” Joshua Rothman writes. “And yet many forces—thinking machines, aging, economic and social dislocation—appear to be making us feel redundant.” Read his latest column: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/P4…
