Invaders??? Women??? In gay safe spaces??? Ooops. Someone seems to have forgotten our history and how gays and women have had each other’s backs way before. Remember how drag queens and women shared the same struggles against discrimination? How they found comfort and solidarity in each other, especially in times when society looked down on them for simply being who they are? Hello??? Walterina Markova and the other “comfort gay” survivors during the Japanese regime. Their stories remind us that sexual violence and oppression have affected both women and queer people, kahit hindi man pare-pareho ang experiences natin. Kaya medyo weird lang to call women invaders in gay spaces, especially gay bars. Hindi ba pwedeng women can simply enjoy drag, support their gay friends, and have fun in spaces where they feel welcome, too? And beh, bilang mga bakla na nakaranas din ng discrimination at exclusion, sana alam natin ang difference between protecting our spaces and making other people feel unwelcome just for being there. 🙂
