Amidst all that’s happening, it’s the second anniversary of the passing of Prof. GN Saibaba, soon after his acquittal by the Bombay High Court. For @the_hindu on how the UAPA continues to imprison dissent since then: thehindu.com/news/national/w…

I am one of those that have signed this letter. If you think what is going on is wrong- do consider also organising and signing similar letters with fellow alums from your college. You don’t have to be a lawyer to see that this is morally and ethically wrong. The issuance of such letters is also an important means of protest. Jai Hind. #SatyamevJayate
#BREAKING Over 200 NLSIU Alumni have issued a statement condemning ‘police action’ taken against protestors on October 10 including the ‘detention and physical manhandling’ of NLSIU alumni and Senior Advocate Shadan Farasat ‘The state cannot arbitrarily detain – even during an Emergency – those who are exercising these rights in the manner seen when over 10,000 people have reportedly been detained across the country’ #NLSIU #Protest #CECProtest #Detention #Police

Supersession is institutional corrosion. When the collegium skips the top three High Court Chief Justices in All-India seniority and elevates numbers 4, 5 and 6, it tells every judge in the country that seniority, service, and expectation mean nothing the moment the closed door closes. You cannot preach independence of the judiciary while practising the same opacity and favouritism you condemn in every other institution. In the Army, Civil Services and judiciary, supersession destroys morale faster than any external threat. Once people realise that merit and seniority are optional, the institution starts selecting for pliability, not competence. That is how institutions rot from the inside. Either give clear, recorded reasons for every supersession or stop pretending the process is pure. Silence is not independence. It is just unaccountable power.
Supreme Court collegium recommends names of 3 High Court Chief Justices for elevation to SC. Interesting: Per All India seniority, Nos 1,2,3 ignored while 4,5,6 recommended.

I watched this as a young (kinda clueless) lawyer in 2013. It inspired me to continue working in criminal defense while scaring my parents about the path I was choosing. Must watch !
The National Award winning #Shahid is finally streaming on Prime Video. It took 13 years for our film to find a streaming home. Shahid tells the story of Shahid Azmi, a lawyer who defended people accused under terror laws and fought for due process in a climate where Muslims were often presumed guilty before being proven innocent. He was murdered for that courage. I’ve often wondered why Shahid remained without a streaming platform for so long. It was released a year before 2014. Then came a political climate in which dissenters, activists, journalists and those defending the rights of the accused increasingly found themselves under suspicion. In that same period, people like Umar Khalid have spent years in prison awaiting trial. Many of us—filmmakers, actors and writers drawn to courageous stories like Shahid—either struggled to get such ideas made or were co-opted by the system into telling “kosher” stories that won national awards thanks to their political conformity and despite their mediocrity. So why now? Why does a film like Shahid finally find a streaming platform in 2026? Has the mood changed? Is there growing resistance to the politics of fear? Whatever the reason, I’m proud of this film. It established me as a co-writer/editor and brought me back to the kind of cinema I believe in. Watch it if you haven’t. Watch it again if you have. This film, made by a wonderful team, is a reminder of the kind of courageous cinema we used to make and celebrate. Thankyou @PrimeVideoIN ✊ #HansalMehta @RajkummarRao @Mdzeeshanayyub @JaiHMehta

We have not had a Sikh judge in the Supreme Court since August 2017, when then-CJI J.S. Khehar retired. Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia is a Sikh judge. He is senior to the three newly recommended judges and was superseded earlier also. His integrity is beyond question. It is beyond comprehension why he is not being elevated to the Supreme Court.

Very impressed by the courage of the Nalsar students. It’s not easy to do this, not only because of external threats, but even more because this is a profession where that constantly pressurises people to maintain conformity and defer to authority. etvbharat.com/amp/en/state/n…

Umar Khalid’s prolonged persecution exemplifies the derailment of justice in India as it makes a mockery of international human rights principles. The Government of India must immediately and unconditionally release student activist Umar Khalid.

BREAKING : This is courageous stuff 👏 Shekhar Suman has directly taken on Modi’s “ Dimagi Naxal” jibe on his show Shekhar Tonite and complete destroyed it. “ Never stop asking questions, every great change, development and idea started with a question , and there was a Dimagi Naxal behind it asking it” This is brutal, expect more ED and CBI raids on him.

NALSAR Students Bar Council expresses solidarity with the 2026 graduating batch of NLSIU amid the cancellation of their convocation. That the NLSIU students were asked to issue a letter to re-invite CJI Surya Kant for convocation deserves condemnation, NALSAR student body says. It is unfortunate if such a demand was insisted by the office of the CJI, NALSAR SBC says. @NALSAR_Official @NLSIUofficial

Sharply questioning the efficacy of the Collegium system in ensuring independence in judicial appointments, Senior Advocate and former High Court Chief Justice, Dr S Muralidhar, said that the last twelve years have witnessed "unexplained interference by the executive" in the selection of judges. Proud of the courage, character, and integrity of the students of NLS. But the less said about an administration and leadership that cannot stand with its own students, the better.

More convocation news. @NLSIUofficial cancels this year’s convocation. This comes in the backdrop of student protests/objections to the Chief Justice of India and the Chairman of the Bar Council of India (Manan Mishra). NLS admin was undoubtedly even more apprehensive than other universities where students had similar objections. Under the NLS Act- the CJI is the Chancellor of the University (unlike most other NLUs where it is the CJ of the jurisdictional High Court) and the Chairman of the BCI is the ex-officio head of the executive committee of the University. The graduating students would have known this and have clearly made a principled choice to not have a convocation over having a convocation presided over by two persons they had strong objections to. @Cockroachisback @SauravDassss

"India of 2047 would be better served if the law doesn't permit criminalising honest criticism of the government or of those running it, or of them being lampooned in cartoons or jokes of standup comedians. India of 2047 would be better served if the India of today stops weaponising the law against those peacefully protesting against the denial of basic rights and if it stops labelling them as 'sinister acts of conspiracy' to destabilise the government." - Dr Muralidhar
