Weekend hack: HackerTube. I was annoyed with YouTube's recommendations so I had Claude filter down 43M comments over 20 years of HN to 6,454 videos that keep being recommended. *Significantly* better viewing experience, ~2 hours with Opus 5.5:
hackertube.org/
- Excellent recs without any logins (state is kept in local browser session)
- Thumbnail is a representative frame from middle of the video instead of the super duper A/B test hyper-optimized user uploads
- Underlying data from the comment analysis as one zip file, point your Claude at it and ask for your own version
- HackerTube Longs ✊
A bit more on the process:
I use Claude Code (desktop app for Mac), Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as my default. I only talk to Claude and have it do everything, the only "manual work" I helped with in tandem was in the browser (reminiscent of MenuGen): 1) I had to create some kind of API key from Google Cloud UI to query YouTube for video metadata, 2) I booted up a VPS box for serving and 3) I bought the domain name. Once the box was up I gave Claude the IP and told it update, secure, harden, deploy and optimize the code, and it did the whole thing.
Many awesome projects that would have normally taken weeks/months even can now be few-shotted for breakfast. What else are we not thinking of.

Ghostty 1.4 is now out! Full Kitty graphics with animation (the first terminal besides Kitty to do it), scrollback compression for much lower memory usage, macOS 27 support, a new OpenGL renderer on Linux, ghostty +ssh, big performance gains, and hundreds more changes.
The highlights:
- Scrollback compression: scrollback compresses ~90+% on average, meaning your terminals use that much less live memory
- Huge memory savings across the board: no single large thing, just lots of good improvements lowers memory usage everywhere, netting anywhere from 50 to 90% less memory usage depending on workload
- Kitty graphics is now 100% complete, including animation and relative placements, after a full conformance pass against the spec and Kitty itself
- The Kitty clipboard protocol, with an image preview when a program asks to read your clipboard
- Split drag and drop on Linux, including between windows
- ghostty +ssh installs terminfo on remote hosts automatically, so things just work over SSH
- Lots of terminal emulation accuracy fixes
This release is 7 months of work from 172 contributors over 2,889 commits. It also fixes 10 security advisories, so please update.

Love this by Kent Beck:
The value of a codebase =
the number of features it currently has +
the number of futures it allows
↘ You add features, it collapses futures.
↗ You need to work to gain back the futures.
The same applies with AI, it just happens faster.
After upgrading to macOS 27.0.1, my 2017 LG UltraFine started acting weird! Randomly going black, USB controller no longer being recognized... etc...
Downloaded LG Screen Manager from the App Store (1-star rating lol) and noticed a firmware update was available. But the updater kept crashing.
Apparently, this has been a known issue on Apple Silicon since the M3 and macOS 26, but @LGUS hasn't given a shit about fixing it for two years.
So I gave Codex Astra the IPS crash report. It identified a double-free memory error, downloaded the latest firmware, patched the updater with a 30-line Python script, and code-signed it ("untrusted developer" warning, but who cares).
Ran the patched updater, and my monitor is back to life. All issues gone.
Wild times. All of that took me 15 minutes. What a time to be a dev.
Shame on LG, though.

To all Muslims,
Imagine a large number of Japanese people moving to a country where Islam is the state religion and making the following demands:
Please build a Shinto shrine.
Please allow us to cremate our dead.
Please provide financial support for childbirth expenses.
Please assign us female doctors.
Please serve Japanese food in schools.
Please serve Japanese food in prisons.
What would you do if they started making these demands? Wouldn’t that be unthinkable?
However, some Muslims have made the following demands:
Please build a mosque.
Please allow us to bury our dead.
Please provide financial support for childbirth expenses.
Please assign us female doctors.
Please serve halal food in schools.
Please serve halal food in prisons.
They have made these demands. They are exactly the same demands.
That is why they are being criticized.

We don’t use Starlink for our responses inside Russia. We use Starlink to intercept jet-powered “shaheds” that attack our civilians and kill families.
Starlink wasn’t turned off – its speed was reduced. And when the speed was reduced, we were unable to intercept a certain number of jet-powered “shaheds.” We couldn’t use a tool that helps protect people. That’s very painful and frustrating.
We also use Starlink for mid-range strikes against enemy military targets in our temporarily occupied territories. We couldn’t do that when the restrictions were in place. And third, what matters most is people. Our warriors, who spend weeks and months on the front line, receive food and water delivered by drones using Starlink.
Has the speed been fully restored to what it was before? No. Is it being restored now? Yes.
From a conversation with media representatives in Brussels. (2/3)

EXCLUSIVE: Elon Musk approached Donald Trump with the idea of slowing down Starlink in Ukraine, The Telegraph can reveal.
The billionaire tech entrepreneur approached the US president with the proposal to introduce speed limits on the system, which hampered Ukraine’s drone defences, according to four sources familiar with the discussions.

“I'm a coward when it comes to matters of the heart. That is my fatal flaw.”
- Haruki Murakami
Haruki Murakami, born in Japan in 1949, is a celebrated novelist known for blending everyday life with dreamlike and surreal elements. His writing often explores loneliness, memory, love, identity, loss, and the search for meaning. Through his distinctive storytelling style, Murakami has become an influential figure in contemporary literature, with his works translated and widely read throughout the world.
The quote reflects the vulnerability and fear that can come with truly loving someone. Murakami suggests that a person may be courageous in many areas of life yet struggle when emotions become deeply personal. Loving someone means opening yourself to rejection, heartbreak, and loss, and that vulnerability can make it difficult to express what you genuinely feel.
By describing this fear as a “fatal flaw,” he suggests that it is more than a minor weakness. Fear can prevent someone from saying what is in their heart or pursuing the relationship they truly want. The quote captures a deeply human contradiction: sometimes the person we care about most is also the person we are most afraid to be vulnerable with, because their ability to hurt us matters more than anyone else’s.
