A Monday morning thread of all the incredible work my co-workers/friends have done. People don't always think "great journalism" when they think about Idaho but they should.
Read on for great pieces you may have missed

I’m part of this blood bath. After dodging layoffs for my entire 19-year career, I finally caught a stray as the Idaho Statesman gutted 60% of its staff.
My last day is Oct. 11. I’m not sure what comes next. Thankfully, I’m part of a union and will receive 6 months of severance.

Today, I was one of many laid off by McClatchy.
I am deeply grateful to @IdahoStatesman for being the first newsroom I got to call home and the reporters and editors I learned so much from.
I’ll be looking for new opportunities to continue my work as a journalist.
The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by @mcclatchy 's decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. This includes 10 journalists in Idaho, and seven across Washington.
These severe cuts will hobble these news organizations and leave the public throughout the Northwest less informed about the events and decisions that affect them, and with fewer people holding the powerful to account.
These are journalists who investigated local hospitals, served as watchdogs over state and local government, showed up at every high school game, jumped in to cover breaking news like wildfires, covered news in overlooked communities, and monitored development in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. One of these papers will no longer have a dedicated reporter covering city hall. Another will no longer have anyone dedicated to covering the state capitol.
McClatchy has decided that short-term profits for a hedge fund matter more than the wellbeing of the communities that its newspapers are supposed to serve. That is a model that is destined to fail.

I have never forgotten when the McClatchy CEO's monthly housing stipend was more than some of my colleagues' salaries. cjr.org/business_of_news/mcc…

this is a devastating loss for Idaho and news in general. Who gains? execs who keep their housing stipends and second homes? because it's not Idaho, and it's not the reporters left.

She's even a drone pilot! We once drove to the Sawtooths to find the literal cracks in the earth from the 2020 central Idaho earthquakes, and then to find a decommissioned Idaho campsite named after Robert E. Lee (it literally wasn't on maps, but @NMBlanchard found it!) HIRE HER

hey for no reason whatsoever just sharing this little tidbit about the last time McClatchy did layoffs
journalism is not really dying. it's being stripped for parts by people who have never cared about it miaminewtimes.com/news/mccla…

Stripping your local newsrooms of talented and well-sourced journalists, leaving the reporters who are left to cover a zillion different beats at once, is an odd way to say you’re “investing in journalism that is differentiated, consequential and difficult to replicate.”

Listen I'll own a bias because I think Nicole is just the coolest but it really blows to see McClatchy willingly give up a reporter in her hometown market who has worked her way up for more than a decade.
Who does this benefit? Because it's not the readers I can tell you that.

I’m one of the journalists who has been laid off. My heart hurts for my coworkers and for our community, which just gets less and less important coverage.
If anyone knows of journalism jobs that are open, I’ll be looking!

Since the 1970s, Idaho’s criminal and civil laws have allowed parents who belong to Followers of Christ and the state’s other faith-healing sects to pray rather than seek medical care as their children die. / Reporting by @audreydutton propublica.org/article/faith…

A Christ faith-healing sect does not believe in medical intervention. This investigation found that at least 15 babies and children in this sect have died from treatable conditions. Defending this practice, one person noted that parents must model this for their CN so they are not later "cursed." Idaho laws protect parents from prosecution. A must read

Super disturbing. Almost every year since 2015, Idaho children in a faith-healing sect have died of treatable conditions such as pneumonia and bacterial infections that turned to sepsis. The state just lets it happen. propublica.org/article/faith… @audreydutton
