There were 300,000 passengers on Friday and 200,000 passengers on Saturday. He is keen to see the weekday numbers for next week when Monday rolls around, as this will be a more normal number.
So #SydneyMetro had 140,000 trips on on Sunday and 63,000 trips on Monday. For comparison, on an average day in May 2018, total patronage on each line was 231,000 trips on T4/SCO, 393,000 trips on T2/T3/T8, and 515,000 trips T1/CCN/BMT. Source: transport.nsw.gov.au/data-an…
Bumped into Hugh Lawson at Bankstown this morning during the opening weekend festivities. Asked him a few questions and he was able to tell me a few new things about the line. A thread. 🧵

Took the metro out to Bankstown from Waterloo this morning. Had a quick chat to Howard Collin, who pulled out a metro badge from his pocket and gave it to me. Definite highlight!

That was a rapid response to public opposition. I wonder how much an election being months away played into it. A shame, there were good elements to the proposed changes, albeit with the known trade-offs. smh.com.au/politics/nsw/publ…
Another positive: current government acknowledges that Sydney Metro, and the previous government that did the heavy lifting on it, is actually a good thing. A decade ago they spent a lot of effort downplaying it and promising to cancel / scale it back.

Nice graphic of the patronage at each Sydney Train and Metro station from Reddit. It helps with the rationale behind the timetable changes IMO, massive boost in service for Mascot for example which has a higher pax than multiple Macarthur region stations combined.
Allegra Spender makes the case for NSW replacing stamp duty with land tax. The combination of politics and economics here is tricky, will require threading through a narrow needle. Significant short term cost, but the long term payoff is potentially huge.

NSW Labor inherited a modest plan on that transition that they could have built on. Instead they dropped it for short-term political gain.
