Whatever controversial topic (gender relations, foreign policy, epidemiology, manels, SCOTUS, gun violence, women's rights, systemic racism, wokeness, Ivy League, etc) is trending on Twitter.
On this day in 1948, a heavy weather system settled over Donora, Pennsylvania, trapping smoke and gas emissions from a pair of steel and zinc plants and from river boats and residents' coal-burning furnaces. Over five days, a thick, toxic smog killed 20 people and sickened thousands, prompting the first large-scale U.S. health study of an environmental disaster and helping lead to the federal Clean Air Act.

Deservedly scathing op-ed by the NYT:
“If Democrats retake both houses of Congress, and more state governments than they now control, it will tell the world that Mr. Trump does not represent most Americans. It will demonstrate that a country that starts to slide toward autocracy can move back to normalcy, as happened in Hungary this spring. Most important, it will create a desperately needed check on Mr. Trump during his final two years in office.

In a 21-month span, he has done more harm to democracy and the rule of law than any other president in the modern era and perhaps longer than that. He has broken his oath to defend the Constitution by trying to rewrite it on his own. He has refused to honor Congress’s power of the purse and misused national security laws for political ends. He has defied federal court orders on Medicaid funding, deportation orders and more. He has dismantled the Justice Department’s legacy as an impartial enforcer of federal law, turning it into an instrument of retribution against his adversaries while canceling investigations into his allies. He has appointed inept sycophants to oversee crucial government functions, including law enforcement, national defense and public health. He has sought to disenfranchise large numbers of voters, claiming fraud that cannot be found, and championed an extreme new approach to partisan gerrymandering. He has physically besmirched the White House by demolishing the East Wing and financing a garish renovation with donations from wealthy allies.”

On this day in 1825, the Erie Canal officially opened, linking the Hudson River to Lake Erie. Critics had mocked it as "Clinton's Folly," a reference to New York Gov. DeWitt Clinton, but the $7 million waterway cut freight costs from about $100 a ton by wagon to roughly $10 or less, helping make New York City the gateway to the Midwest.

When the next US Congress investigates corruption, Trump's oil-deal-of-the-century with Alejandro Betancourt, the face of Venezuelan corruption, should be top of its list. Two kleptocracies working together. Brilliant essay by @anneapplebaum theatlantic.com/magazine/202…

Times have been tough in this Ohio town ever since the woke mob closed the old Cheesecake Factory. So when Vivek Ramaswamy promised to legalize child rape, they finally had something to cheer about again. But then Obama said something elitist.

Honestly, if you can't figure out my locals based upon my social media posts, I don't even want to know you.

OSSOFF: If you’re late with your rent, the machinery of late fees and eviction is very efficient. But when you tell your landlord about the black mold in your daughter’s bedroom, nobody comes for four months. And then, when you’ve got to take her to the hospital for her asthma attack, you get a $3,000 bill for the ambulance.
Life was already hard enough before Donald Trump lied us into war, before his tariffs made everything more expensive, and before he doubled your health insurance premiums and slashed Medicaid.
It costs more today than ever before in American history to fill up your truck, to stock your fridge, to power your home, to go to the doctor.
Meanwhile, and you’ve seen it, the president and the first family line their pockets to the tune of billions of dollars.
The time has come to wield the power granted to us by our Constitution and rebuke this obscenity.

The MAGA meltdown over Obama’s Cheesecake Factory joke is fucking hilarious. These people have spent a decade worshipping a man who insults literally everyone, but Obama makes ONE joke about Trump’s tacky, gold-plated dictator aesthetic and suddenly the blue-check brigade is clutching pearls and demanding civility.
Now they’re calling OBAMA an out-of-touch elitist while defending a billionaire who lives in a gold-plated fantasyland and shits in a gold toilet.
The selective outrage is embarrassing. And the complete lack of self-awareness should be studied by scientists.
For people who built their entire political identity around “fuck your feelings,” MAGA sure has a lot of fucking feelings. ❄️❄️❄️❄️
Sorry Barrack Hussein @BarackObama,
Cheesecake Factory has good food and it’s a place Americans can afford.
We can’t all be like you and big Mike. You know, with private 5 star chefs who end up drowning and dying while naked in 2 feet of water at our Martha’s Vineyard mansions.
