What happened in Bondi Beach was horrifying and a brazenly antisemitic act of mass-murder.

In 1931 in Kiel, Germany, Rachel Posner, the wife of a rabbi, took this picture.
On the back of the photograph she wrote:
“‘Death to Judah,’ so the flag says.
‘Judah lives forever,’ so the light answers.”

I think of this photo a lot. The owner, Rachel Posner, donated it to Yad Vashem, and on the back wrote in German: “Chanukah 5692 (1932). ‘Death to Judah,’ so the flag says. ‘Judah will live forever,’ so the light answers.” Some lights cannot be extinguished. Chag Sameach.

Horrible news out of Australia this Hanukkah. Darkness trying to steal a moment meant for light.
As Jews, we do what we’ve always done.
We light the candles anyway.
Hanukkah isn’t about ignoring the dark. It’s about defying it. One flame. Then another. More light than hate. More joy than fear.
