Friedman argued for "eliminat[ing] the private creation of money." Not only have we not done that, we have decided to publicly backstop the dollar-denominated money substitutes issued by the financial sector -- redistributing wealth upward and pumping asset prices ever higher.
Just to underline: In his famous essay on neoliberalism, Friedman went on at length about the need for strong antitrust laws and government control over the money supply. Like it or dislike it, he specifically wasn't arguing for pure laissez faire.

I wrote this book and I did not know there was a National Dollar Day
Did you know today is National Dollar Day? Today marks the day the United States established it's monetary system. If you're curious to learn more, dive into the dollar's fascinating story in Brendan Greeley's THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR! In it, Greeley shows how the dollar became America’s greatest export, spawning a vast financial industry that enriches the wealthy, even as the rest of the country’s industries suffer. Grab your copy at the link! penguinrandomhouse.com/books…

Nice review of a couple of dollar books in the @newrepublic, calling The Almighty Dollar "deeply researched and almost giddily contrarian" newrepublic.com/article/2137…

Buy a copy of @bhgreeley’s The Almighty Dollar this summer. Use a crisp $1, $5, or $20 as a bookmark. When you reach the final page, you’ll be looking at it much differently. You’ll know who really makes it, who really owns it and whether yours is one of the really valuable ones.

Bitcoin, Cryptos 2026 vs. Stocks 1930 From The Almighty Dollar by Brendan Greeley “It is always tempting to read dips as a sign that the amateurs are scared and that’s exactly what Fischer did. Just before the 1929 crash, he told newspapers that stock values had reached a “permanently higher plateau” and would be even higher in a few months. That is not what happened. But Irving Fischer believed his own predictions, was heavily invested in stocks and lost most of his fortune” Parallels to US Crypto ETF launches and Trump sons since they helped to peak Bitcoin, cryptos in 2025.

Great Books for Summer or Winter Reading: Thought-provoking, perhaps controversial, and definitely worth reading! "The Almighty Dollar 500 Years of the World's Most Powerful Money" by Brendan Greeley. "In this ambitious and groundbreaking history of the dollar, financial journalist and economic scholar Brendan Greeley makes a new argument about the origins of our money—and the people and nations who have surrendered to it. ...Greeley traces a captivatingly complex path across time and place, from the industrial collapse at the heart of Spain’s 17th-century silver empire, to the birth of American paper dollars in colonial Maryland, 19th-century New Orleans bank failures, and the small town of Hawarden, Iowa, which created its own dollars during the Great Depression. At every surprising turn, Greeley upends assumptions about global currencies and draws out the centuries-old tension between how dollars are manufactured and whom they actually serve." amzn.to/4wCPnXe

Great piece by @bhgreeley on monetarism's gradual comeback. The literature that's built up over the last decade is impressive. I suspect we will see Chairman Warsh increasingly refer to monetary aggregates as time goes on. ft.com/content/6633c407-46dc… via @ft

This was such a great conversation! Turns out Andrew Yang is really into local currency experiments, so we got to talk about America's long history of printing local dollars when the banks fail. And I learned about Baltimore Bucks!
