This kind of take is kind of out of touch from reality. Like the comments say, not everyone is getting 9 months of pay as severance. Most people have dependants - parents, family, kids. "Go spend your savings without an inflow" does not work without financial safety net.
If you work at MSFT and are below VP - I think you should take the their voluntary exit package. It is a clear sign that they need to cut costs & you have no way of knowing when / who’ll be axed.
The severance they’ll offer later will be 3-4 months but the VEO gives you 9 months of pay. Take the money, take the year off, go see the world, learn music, get fit, spend time with family, work on that side project, do whatever calls you.
9 months of paid leave is a super generous deal from Microsoft.
In current market its tough to get a job even if you spend 6 months. It gets especially tough if you go spend your time somewhere els chilling and come back to see whatever knowledge you had is outdated now. For someone with old parents, newborns, it's insane gamble.
If you take 6 months of severance, then you have to make sure you feed your family in those months, take care of medical bills, pay rents etc, while making sure you are preparing yourself to get a job, which burning all the savings.
They had to setup an SIT to investigate a clear case of attempt to murder to a woman. This is the scene of woman safety in the country. If you are victim with proof, then also you will be dragged around for months to get any kind of justice.
