Historical exclusion may persist through the ties that helped excluded households cope, not only through the resources it denied them.

Excluded groups and neighborhoods get less schooling for generations. Can human capital gaps outlive resource equalization? If so, why?
My JMP looks for answers on the two sides of a line drawn in 1542, with historical censuses, a survey & experiment, and a framework 🧵

I use a framework where schooling limits the ability to reciprocate with neighbors, delays earnings, and raises the chance of moving away.
Under its assumptions, the survey and experiment imply a cost of ~2/5 of the perceived return, enough to generate the attendance gap.
Historical exclusion may persist through the ties that helped excluded households cope, not only through the resources it denied them.

The economic history class of 2026/27 is now on Our Long Walk. It is my annual attempt to list every job market candidate in economic history: 86 this year, each with their job market paper.
New this year: what happened to the three classes before them. (Link at 7/10.)

We tend to think of political change as coming from below: organized masses challenge elite power.
But where does the capacity to mobilize come from? Can excluded groups develop it under autocracy?
My JMP traces one answer back to Peru's 1969 land reform.

Very proud of this, one phd, two kids, two jobs, and two transatlantic moves later (and too many times giving up in between). Thanks to all those who helped along the way!
