A potentially controversial thought: We should make AI PhD coursework only optional. So many of our PhDs are tied in numerous classes, but: - Self-learning is easier than ever. - Many incoming PhDs are already strong researchers. - We need to free Profs' time for more research mentorship. - Urgent AI problems need free-thinking minds (like our academic students!), independent of industry for-profit directions. Courses are valuable. But they don't need to be mandatory, especially when so many problems with AI are threatening our society, and urgently need to be solved.

How do you tell if authors fabricated their research results? Sometimes: they just tell you. Read, e.g., this caption carefully. Another banger of a post by my friend Nihar B. Shah on his blog, where he found at least 20+ such #ICLR2027 submissions: researchonresearch.blog/2026…

An Anthropic researcher just told a room full of PhD students that their career plan no longer exists His 3 pieces of advice for students: 1. Use AI every day. If you're on the exponential, you'll never fall behind it. 2. Choose projects that get better when compute scales. The rest will be solved before you finish them. 3. Stop planning your career as if it were stable. The safe option no longer buys safety; it no longer exists. And a phrase that sums it all up: "Writing is thinking. If you outsource your writing, you outsource your thinking." The talk is titled "The End of the Anthropocene"

Okay so, we just found that over 50 papers published at @Neurips 2025 have AI hallucinations I don't think people realize how bad the slop is right now It's not just that researchers from @GoogleDeepMind, @Meta, @MIT, @Cambridge_Uni are using AI - they allowed LLMs to generate hallucinations in their papers and didn't notice at all. It's insane that these made it through peer review👇

“The biggest challenge in AI (or in HCI) today is not making interfaces ‘better’; it’s understanding the human side of the loop.” Absolutely. Deep human modeling is hard, whether from an AI or HCI perspective. But I think we’re still far from exploring it enough.
Are you even a real field without doomerism on twitter? AI Doomerism is weak. Say hello to HCI Doomerism. My take 👇 minsukchang.com/blog/2025/hc…

My work at #ASSETS2025 (1/3)! 👂 Can AI perceive sound in a way humans prefer and present it clearly? Current tools like Apple Sound Recognition identify labels like “dog barking” or “car honking.” But is that enough for DHH users to understand complex auditory scenes?

We worked with 20 DHH participants to develop and evaluate SoundNarratives. ✨ It consistently outperformed direct audio–language model queries ✨ Showed promising use cases for everyday sound awareness

💡Unglamorous show up
⚠️ The #CHI2026 paper I submitted? It almost didn't exist. That's the BTS part academics never post. So I will…to normalize what I call unglamorous persistence. This summer was one of my hardest, mentally. 🌥️ Between global (funding crises in academia, political tension) and personal (facing multiple rounds of racial abuse) challenges, my tanks was low. 😔 ⚡️ So I did the only thing I could: I showed up. Not heroically. Not with perfect focus. Just... present. 🛠️ I assembled a small team. Came to meetings even when I felt hollow. Some days I wrote two sentences. Some days I just listened. But I stayed in the room. 🔥 Here's what showing up bought me: When the fog lifted, the scaffolding was there—notes, drafts, momentum. The paper had been writing itself in the margins while I survived. 💡 Discipline isn't about peak performance. It's self-love for your future self: showing up today so they have something to build on tomorrow. Three things that saved me: 📍 Lower the bar, keep the rhythm. Two sentences > zero. 🤗 Lean on kind collaborators. Let people be your structure. 📈 Trust the compound effect. Small deposits add up. If you're in the fog: Try the smallest possible "show up" today. 🌱 If you know someone struggling: Check on your people. 🙏 💪 Because sometimes the gap between "almost didn't exist" and "submitted to CHI" is just... showing up. We need to stop pretending brilliant science comes from brilliant minds working brilliantly at all times. Most of the stuff in academia is this unglamorous persistence from people who keep showing up. #AcademicLife #MentalHealth #CHI2026 #BTS
