the holmes story is used *all* the time to discredit me + my team's legitimate technical accomplishments it's unbelievably frustrating + angering, and it has made what is already a very hard company to build significantly more challenging so now feeling pity for her is strange

Mathematician Terence Tao: "we're seeing the end of the romantic era of mathematics, the age of heroes. we're moving into an industrial era where math becomes large-scale, done in big teams like the other sciences" We're entering, rather unwillingly, a new era where exciting new things are possible, but some things are being lost

the correct move would have been to set the budget of the bottom 99% to $0 and give it to the top 1%
New: Accenture has told employees it will only fund $29 per month of Claude use. Meaning that employees who often spend as much as $1,000 a month are now scrambling to find ways to keep access to the tool. A sign of the continuing crack down of AI 404media.co/accenture-tells-…

ran gemini 4 argon on the same internal cfo.ai evals - comparable to opus 5.5 in terms of cost efficiency (assuming introductory pricing), but 2X slower gpt-6.1-sol still 3x more cost efficient than either (though slower than opus 5.5 in this run)
we found opus 5.5 to be 2X as efficient as gpt-6-sol in our internal cfo.ai evals so i was not expecting 6.1-sol to improve on that much but to see it 3X the efficiency of opus 5.5 and 2.5X against even sonnet 5.5 is actually 🤯 this is an insane point release

I think about this clip a lot...
A retired NASA engineer who had worked on the Space Shuttle program for 25 years was hired by SpaceX at age 62. He described the first week as the most disorienting experience of his professional life. At NASA, a design change required 3 meetings, 2 committees, a review board, and 6 to 18 months of documentation. At SpaceX, his new supervisor said "if it works, build it. If it doesn't, change it by Friday." He sat at his desk after the first day and called his wife. He told her he felt like a man who had been swimming with ankle weights for 25 years and someone just cut them off. He could move. He could decide. He could build something in the morning and test it in the afternoon. The constraint that he had accepted as the nature of aerospace engineering turned out to be the nature of bureaucracy. Within 6 months he had contributed to more design iterations than he had completed in his last 5 years at NASA. Not because he was working harder. Because the time between having an idea and testing the idea collapsed from months to hours. The same brain. The same knowledge. A different operating system. He described a specific moment where he proposed a modification to a Raptor engine component. At NASA, the proposal would have entered a queue. At SpaceX, the modification was machined by the end of the day and tested by the following morning. He watched his idea become a physical object in 18 hours. At NASA, 18 hours would not have been enough to schedule the first meeting to discuss whether to schedule a meeting. He told an interviewer: "I didn't get smarter when I went to SpaceX. I got faster. The intelligence was always there. The system was in the way." The difference between SpaceX and NASA is not talent. NASA has extraordinary talent. The difference is the time between a thought and a test. SpaceX compresses it. NASA elongates it. The same engineer produces 10x more at SpaceX than at NASA because the bottleneck was never the engineer. It was the meetings about the meetings about the work.

Today, we're launching the ability to say yes to Muse at work. People are giving Muse access to their company's most sensitive data & systems. Yet companies have no way to control this access. Many are blocking it. Others have had Muse go rogue, leaking company data, sending unauthorized emails, and more. Runlayer provides hundreds of secured connectors for Muse, governed by deterministic policies & runtime security models that you can control. Runlayer also detects when Muse is being used within company systems without governance, and alerts you. Teams get access to the most powerful personal agent. Companies maintain security and control. Win win.

Everyone is sick of generic AI, including us. Gamma was the first AI presentation platform to reach real scale. But now that AI tools are everywhere, everything looks the same. Earlier this summer, we came to an uncomfortable conclusion: without a step change in visual variety, Gamma’s output would look and feel too similar to all the other AI tools. The entire point of a presentation is to help someone "get" your idea, to see it as unique and do something with it. We started over. Today we're shipping Gamma 5, the biggest product overhaul in our company's history. We rebuilt Gamma to create presentations that actually look like you and your brand. Your teams can design anything they dream up, following your brand's aesthetic or something entirely new, with every frontier and image model under the hood. And the same goes for your docs, social assets, and graphics. We revamped our agent, design tools, editing, import, export, connectors, and more. Get your ideas out there.

Seeing the riots in France and the terrible state of the French economy made me think of this 🔥 speech by Lee Kuan Yew. "Look at the buildings around you. Look at the stock market bouncing up. Let me tell you how to bring it down. Have a couple of really good riots, shake political confidence." On top of that, the French economy is collapsing. Only one in three French people works in the real economy. Two-thirds live off other people’s taxes. The entire system is completely unsustainable due to absurd pensions and runaway state spending. At the end of the clip, Lee says: "My political opponent says that we are 'obsessed with profits' I say 'YES! That’s how Singapore survives.' If you have no profit, who pays for all of this? If you make profit into a dirty word.. Singapore dies!” Beyond mass migration, this is how Western Europe is dying btw.
