seeing creator coverage of stuff like the new iPhone has made me think a lot about short form content. i think many short form creators struggle with long form because long form requires you to have something to say, while short form only requires you to have something to show. you just hold the new phone... you don't have to have a take or an opinion. just... here it is! wow. so nice. shiny. same for all products really. you can just show it without saying a damn thing. "here's my camera bag" doesn't matter if you shoot potato content... at least you have the "stuff". but the thing is "stuff" and good visuals can't carry you alone on YouTube. everyone can make stuff look good now, but as soon you have to say something that's where many fall apart. i think the folks showing stuff will be forgotten because it's too easy to replicate, and it has no real value other than being an extension of a product's marketing. you can make money off it, and grow a large audience but if you're someone who wants more, it won't fulfill you. so your IG reel showing a new lens has 1.5m views, what about your short film with it? what has the ability to have a real lasting impact on an audience... a video of a camera, or a video you can make WITH a camera? get your ego boost all you want but if you go viral a handful of times your baseline just keeps getting pushed higher until you finally realize it means absolutely nothing. you gotta make shit with meaning and substance to really last in this game, and it's becoming increasingly clear not many are cut out for it, because everyday more people just want to show things... and far fewer have anything to say.
