ON LEAVE: A police sergeant threatened to rip a Black woman's Ring camera off her wall when she wouldn't show the footage. She wasn't a suspect.
"Otherwise, I'm ripping it off the wall, I'm writing a search warrant, and I'm gonna keep you up all night."

Officers were investigating a nearby shooting and wanted her doorbell video. She told them she had a baby inside.
Sgt. Jennifer Umphlet then told her she was being detained for "not cooperating."
Another officer later said she "wound up in handcuffs over nothing."
The shooters were later charged without her footage. After the video resurfaced, Umphlet was put on leave. City records now list her salary as $0.
Was this police work or a cop abusing her badge?

🚨The proposed Draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Control and Supervision of Experiment, Breeding and Trading of Laboratory Animals) Rules, 2026 roll back three decades of vital animal protection safeguards.
Major red flags in the draft framework include:
🚨Self-Approval Kills Independent Scrutiny (Rule 11):
Institutional Animal Ethics Committees (IAECs) would get the power to greenlight "mild" and "moderate" experiments internally without prior central CCSEA clearance.
When the applicant acts as the approving authority, conflict of interest eliminates independent oversight.
🚨Pain Scale Manipulation (Rule 7 & Annexure I):
Prolonged solitary confinement, nutritional deprivation, inescapable distress, and tumour induction are reclassified as merely "mild" or "moderate" to bypass central review.
Severe lethal-endpoint toxicity testing remains permissible.
🚨Open Market Animal Sourcing (Rule 21(2)):
Laboratories could procure farm animals, birds, and fish from unregistered suppliers and open markets when registered breeders fall short.
This destroys traceability, compromises research validity, and fuels illicit animal trade.
Why new draft Indian rules for lab animal procurement matter to U.S.
Use of “random source” street animals in drug safety testing is a big step backward for both animal welfare & human health, including for Americans taking Indian-made generic pharmaceuticals
animals24-7.org/2026/10/28/w…
🚨Loopholes for Street & Wild Animals (Rule 5):
Despite nominal prohibitions, wide exceptions allow stray dogs, feral cats, and protected wildlife to be funneled into testing laboratories under vague "scientific justifications".
🚨Dilution of Welfare Safeguards:
The draft drops explicit mandatory anaesthesia mandates from the 1998 rules, relaxes restrictions on reusing traumatised animals, and reduces lifelong post-experiment rehabilitation duties to non-binding future guidelines.
🚨Makeshift Facilities (Rule 2(i)):
Expanding legal definitions to include non-enclosed spaces and mobile testing vans introduces severe biosafety risks, hazardous waste disposal gaps, and public health threats.
🚨Ignoring Validated #NAMs :
While international regulators (US FDA, EU Directive 2010/63/EU) legally prioritize non-animal New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), India risks deregulating cruelty rather than mandating human-relevant organ-on-a-chip, 3D bioprinting, and AI technologies.
Over 90% of drugs that pass animal trials fail in human clinical testing.

Survivor accounts and some fighter/Haganah reports describe Irgun and Lehi actions including:
1. Families lined up and shot, children among the dead.
2. Prisoners and wounded executed after capture.
3. One claim of a pregnant woman shot then cut open.
4. Bodies piled and burned.
5. House-to-house grenades and fire on noncombatants.
Death toll estimates center on 100-110. These details remain contested by researchers finding most deaths in combat with no verified systematic massacre or rapes.

A plan backed by millions of dollars is raising serious concerns for animal welfare advocates in the United States.
Billionaire investor Joe Lonsdale, co-founder of Palantir, has backed Safer Human Medicine with a reported $20 million investment. The company wants to establish a massive breeding operation in Georgia that could eventually house up to 30,000 monkeys for medical research.
The animals would primarily be long-tailed macaques, intelligent and social primates that are already classified as endangered.
The company says the United States needs a reliable domestic supply of monkeys for biomedical research. It argues that relying on overseas suppliers has created serious supply problems for American research facilities.
But many people are asking a different question. Should the answer be to breed tens of thousands of monkeys for laboratory experiments?
These animals are not products on an assembly line. They are social creatures with complex needs. They form bonds, experience stress and need space to live in conditions that support their well-being.
The proposal has also faced strong opposition from local residents and animal protection groups. Concerns have been raised about animal welfare, public health and the impact such a large facility could have on the surrounding community.
There is another part of this story worth remembering. The founder of Safer Human Medicine previously worked as an executive at Envigo, the company involved in a major animal welfare scandal over its treatment of thousands of beagles. Envigo later pleaded guilty to federal animal welfare violations.
The proposed Georgia facility is not yet operating. But the plan raises important questions about the future of animal testing in America.
Medical research matters. Finding treatments for serious diseases matters. But should progress come at the cost of breeding tens of thousands of intelligent animals for experiments?
Science is also making progress with human cell-based research, organ-on-a-chip technology and other alternatives that could reduce the need for animal testing.
We should be asking how much more can be done to advance these methods.
