People who can no longer consent deserve the same protection as any other Canadian. In 2025, the UN disability rights committee recommended against expanding MAiD to advance requests. Parliament can pass the mental illness exclusion and take advance requests out of C-41. 15/

The federal government introduced Bill C-41 today. It would let MAiD be approved after a person can no longer consent. If they pull their arm away as the needle goes in, a clinician decides whether that means no. I asked officials what in the bill guides that call. 1/

Waiver of final consent, in the Criminal Code since 2021, where death must be reasonably foreseeable: the person is assessed and approved, and the date is set in writing, while they can still consent. This doctor faces exhaustion, difficult decisions and the heartbreak of caring for people in crisis. Yet he answered your mockery with grace and an invitation to understand.
Take him up on it. Spend an ER shift alongside him. You might gain some perspective and a little compassion. If you disagree with his views, address his arguments instead of counting his tweets.
