THE RAF SPY FLIGHT THAT MAY NEVER HAVE HAPPENED
The CIA says it happened. The British archives can’t prove it. And somewhere in between is one of the Cold War’s strangest aviation mysteries.
In 1953, an RAF English Electric Canberra reportedly penetrated Soviet airspace on a secret mission to photograph Kapustin Yar, a heavily guarded ballistic missile testing facility deep inside the USSR.
According to an official CIA history, the Soviets were waiting.
Fighters intercepted the British aircraft, damaged it, and nearly shot it down. Somehow, the Canberra escaped. The CIA even recorded that British officials privately confirmed the operation to American intelligence representatives in February 1954.
For decades, the story has been associated with Canberra WH726 and a classified reconnaissance program called Project ROBIN. Some accounts describe a flight from West Germany, Soviet fighters attacking the aircraft, and a desperate escape into Iran.
But there’s a problem. The surviving British records tell a different story.
Historian Chris Pocock uncovered evidence that Project ROBIN was actually a long-range photographic reconnaissance program designed to photograph Soviet controlled territory from outside hostile airspace.
And WH726? We have actual photographs of that aircraft receiving its enormous 240-inch reconnaissance camera at Hanscom Air Force Base in 1954, months after the alleged Soviet penetration.
Afterward, WH726 conducted documented reconnaissance missions along Warsaw Pact borders.
But no publicly released British mission report has established that WH726 ever flew over Kapustin Yar.
Then, in September 1957, a CIA U-2 successfully photographed the missile range, providing documented reconnaissance coverage of the facility.
So what happened in 1953?
Was another Canberra secretly sent into Soviet territory? Did intelligence officials confuse separate reconnaissance operations? Or are the records of one of Britain’s boldest Cold War missions still buried somewhere in a classified archive?
An official CIA history records the interception. British archival research has yet to substantiate the famous flight.
More than seven decades later, we still cannot say with certainty which version is right.
And that’s what makes this story fascinating.
You were never here…
