Was trying to explain to someone the scope of whatever expertise I have: I look at how parenting has changed over the past generation or two, and why parents are so afraid for their kids, and the growth of "worst-first thinking" when it comes to parents allowing  their kids to do on their own. (Thinking up the WORST case scenario FIRST, and proceeding as if it's likely to happen.) The impact of nearly constant adult surveillance and assistance is making kids anxious. But ironically, the more that parents watch and hover, the more anxious they become too. They are watching their kids so closely that they see everything their kids are doing sub-optimally, which makes them hover even more, and it's an endless cycle. That's why the Surgeon General found that kids are more anxious than ever -- and PARENTS are more anxious than ever. - L.S.
