🧵Thread: Rethinking Sports Practice: The Value of Opposed vs. Unopposed Drills
Traditional coaching often emphasises isolated, unopposed drills to master technique before applying skills in game situations. But recent research challenges this approach.
A 2025 study reveals why "alive" practice environments may be more effective for skill development. 🧠 👇

"One of my biggest challenges with grassroots coaches"
Here’s something I see far too often.
Sessions that are purely reactions to the weekend’s game.
A mistake happens on Saturday, and by Tuesday, the entire session is built around correcting it.
But here’s the issue...

My Observations 🇺🇸 🧵
Here are a few thoughts after having trained kids and listened to coaches from coast to coast.
▪️Passivity
Kids need to be held accountable for their energy and intensity.
▪️Parents.
So many coaches being burdened by a few overly aggressive parents.
▪️Drills
Even today we promote limiting rather than holistic development.
▪️Leadership
Too many DOC’s get drained by administration details rather than being able to focus on coaching and curriculum.
▪️Expectations
Kids thrive under high demands and elevated expectations. Our kids will devour challenges if they engage the brain and body. Amazing response from 8 year-olds to semi-pro players.
▪️Excuses
The most common excuse is to say, “My kids can’t because their level is too low.” Nonsense. I worked with rec and high level players this trip and all are capable of much more than we think.
▪️ Coaches
We have so many kind, caring and passionate coaches serving children admirably. They deserve our respect and gratitude.
▪️Change
We can make a massive difference. With positive energy and a purposeful & proven curriculum, we can achieve even more.
🙏 Thanks to all coaches at ALL levels for your commitment. It matters and you are amazing mentors. Gracias.

This study suggests that "fundamental" ⚽️ skills like receiving and passing are not distinct skills to be trained in isolation. The researchers found that players' movements when receiving a ball differed depending on whether they then had to make a quick pass afterwards.

Critical coaching point…play does not always equate to games. Through RLD and the CLA coaches can ensure “play” is a component of practice activities.
Play brings real advantages over time. The catch, however, is that these benefits come about precisely because those engaged in play—be they children or adults--Education or soccer—aren't targeting these outcomes.
If we try to get better--we don't...but if we let go...
"The fundamental paradox of play is that in order to be able to reach a variety of new goals in the long run, you have to actively turn away from goal seeking in the short run."

Great question.
In other words if we want players to excel in the game environment then why do we not make practice more like that game environment. More competitive, intense, get rid of flow drills, more game elements, more decision making, etc.

“Technique isn't plug and play
As a a matter of fact technique developed out of context has to be relearned in context”
This quote is the essence of technique training vs skill development.
Without game context all you get is technique. Skill requires game context.

Not only is this a great list of snippets but it also provides coaches a great list of podcast to follow and use as resources for the CLA, Skill Acquisition, Learning Theory and other concepts within the Ecological Dynamics framework.
