New! A little tool for indie developers to check which search terms an app ranks for. Totally free; no "give us your email address" or "book a call" nonsense. It's great for your own apps, but also to check out competitors! kickstart.tools/check

"Mom, can we get GPT?" "No, we have GPT at home." Introducing preowned: a local server that puts the models built into macOS behind an OpenAI-compatible API. github.com/mattt/preowned Your Mac drove off the line with a language model, an image maker, a transcriber, a translator, and a trunk full of voices. Point any OpenAI client at preowned, and chat (with streaming and structured output), embeddings, transcription, translation, and speech run right there on your Mac. Ask for gpt-4o or whisper-1, and you get Apple's model for the job. Don't worry about what's under the hood. Any API key works — no credit check required! Sold as-is: no tool calling, no Responses API, and on macOS 27, Image Playground wants a person to click Done (or a hack that clicks it for you). Requires macOS 26 or later on Apple silicon, with Apple Intelligence turned on for chat and images. Take it for a test drive: brew install mattt/tap/preowned preowned serve Come on down! 🚗

If you're hearing about the lack of app support on the Duo and wagging your finger at the makers of your favorite app… + Duo is a complicated device—many poses & core UI changes. + Developers had 3 weeks before press units went out + Likely <1% were able to test on real devices + Expect many app updates to land before you get your device + Long term, it'll take time for new patterns to emerge Lastly, app makers don't get any of the $2K+ you paid for this device and most won't make any additional $ off this work. So instead of wagging your finger, consider a hug.

Apple ships a lot for developers, and it's easy to lose track. So I made Cupertino Tech to see it all in one place: cool icons, platforms, code samples, WWDC sessions and a timeline back to 2001. Spot something missing? Tell me and I'll add it. cupertino.tech

As you adapt your app for iPhone Duo, you may find yourself considering putting a NavigationSplitView inside a TabView. It’s true that UIKit recommends against nesting a split view controller within another container in most cases[^1] and that many Apple apps treat the sidebar and tab bar as alternate presentations of the same navigation. But there isn’t a blanket design rule against list-detail navigation within a tab. The distinction is what each view does: - A TabView with the .sidebarAdaptable style lets people switch between top-level areas of your app, presented as tabs or a sidebar. - A NavigationSplitView lets people navigate through a hierarchy, where selecting something in one column controls what appears in the next. Those can be complementary. The pitfall to avoid is having multiple sidebars doing the same job. In fact, the HIG even suggests using a sidebar within a tab on visionOS when your app’s hierarchy is deep[^2]. Just make sure the sidebar selection doesn’t change which tab is open! If tabs organize your app’s sections and a split view gives each section a useful list-detail layout, I say go for it. A new form factor like the Duo is a good time to revisit old assumptions. But given UIKit’s historical guidance, be mindful you may encounter some rough edges. This would be a good question for the UI frameworks team at a future iPhone Duo Apple Group Lab. The @pushpushapp Duo adoption is coming along nicely in @bitrig. NavigationSplitView has been my best friend. Video on my journey coming soon.

I don't want to pay for Sentry. So I built a tiny, self-hosted alternative that uses around 8 MB of memory with an open-source iOS app that sends errors straight to my phone. No Slack. No Telegram. No subscription. It’s called Boop and it's 100% free & open source.
