Like many many other people tonight, I suspect, weβre settling down to have our dinner in front of an old episode of Planet Earth. He was only 80 when he made this one! A stripling! Happy birthday Sir David πΎ

What an excellent time to listen again to Hilary Mantel's Reith lectures, on what the dead can tell us, being dead. (Tongued with fire beyond the language of the living.) bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08tcbrβ¦

Itβs pretty standard that when someone starts on about Freedom of Speech they really want the other thing.

I thought raising the flag was about unity and not racism. Someone waited for this lady to cross, took a picture as a gotcha, and this weirdo shared it.

Incredible pic from @PaulGillisphoto this morning.
If you want to show someone what Bristol is like, show them this, with the caveat that people out and about at the time in Knowle and Brislington went about their morning business without giving it a second look.

Always find these lines immensely and terribly moving, for their perfect observation of tone, for their simplicity and gentleness.

Lots of self-flattering Labour sneers about the New Left Party. But hundreds of thousands of people expressing interest should tell you: (a) there's something very broken in the structure of electoral politics, (b) you've failed in fixing or representing that discontent.

My DoktorgroΓvater Cal Watkins, a scholar of Indo-European linguistics and poetics, was adamant that there's really no such thing as "summary." The content of a work and its form are radically inseparable. Nothing is Homer but Homer; nothing is Austen but Austen.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of legendary speedway photographer Mike Patrick.
Mike passed away on Friday morning after battling illness in recent years, having spent decades rightly regarded as the sportβs top photographer.
He was a regular on the UK domestic circuit and also covered all of speedwayβs biggest events such as World Finals and GPs, providing many of the images which were published in Speedway Star and national newspapers.
We send our sincere condolences to his wife Jenny and his children and grandchildren at this sad time.
Mike was responsible for many of the sportβs most iconic images β as seen above with his incredible shot of Hans Nielsen at Oxford β and thankfully these will survive for generations to come. His contribution to speedway will never be forgotten.
