Court reporting is critical to the health of our democracy, and the rule of law, and is in decline. Fewer specialist court reporters are employed by news organisations and fewer journalists generally know how to navigate the complexity of courts
The Ministry of Justice has ordered the deletion of the UK’s largest court reporting archive. This risks undermining open justice, and I believe, undermines the public accountability role of the press by worsening transparency in the courts. thetimes.com/uk/law/article/…

Bucha. It was a genocide, recognized by everyone. They buried hundreds of people. They tortured people. We found the grave. There were, I believe, around 500 people. When we liberated those towns near Kyiv, there emerged this, you know, this kind of hatred for the Russians, right at that moment. Not even at the moment when they started the full-scale war. Back then nobody understood what it really was yet. People understood what this war was and what Putin did personally when we found those mass graves of tortured adults, children. I mean they didn't just kill them, they tortured and killed them. When we liberated Bucha, I said, bring every journalist here. Don't touch anything, just bring the journalists. The whole world simply has to see this. Imagine finding a mass grave in the U.S. or in Britain, God forbid, with 500 tortured people, adults, kids, dogs, animals shot dead. I mean, they held hunting sprees there from military vehicles. People were running, they were shooting, just hunting, playing games. They literally just played with people, like slavery. So how, after this, can you listen to Putin? And how, after this, can you forgive? From The Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett. (2/3)

Education is a huge patch and it's so important the public are kept properly informed about it via the public broadcaster. Social affairs also huge and vital; muddling lines this way also really unhelpful for public understanding
NEW: BBC will no longer have a dedicated education editor as part of proposal that will see 100 jobs go across BBC News. School leaders call the plan “deeply regrettable” and ask for a rethink. Education/Social affairs editor jobs being combined. theguardian.com/media/2026/o…

I spend much of my week in Lancashire's courts covering cases that might otherwise go unreported. I've written a short piece explaining why some court stories are subscriber-only and how subscriptions help support local journalism. 👇 lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/ne…

For Sheikh Mansour, the stakes of the Manchester City investigation are far-reaching. Scandal has been at his door before. A piece on 1MDB, the Topaz yacht, and a claim that “the sheikh would not get out of bed for less than $100m”. Free to read ⬇️ nytimes.com/athletic/7698639…

This image from events in France overnight is doing the rounds on this sewer. I've not seen it verified so was curious to run it through an AI check. The new OpenAI tool came up with nothing, a surface level SynthID check via Gemini was the same. However, going direct to synthid.com for analysis and here we are. Now, the reports from Le Parisien are genuine. The newspaper reports that an elderly couple were allegedly robbed and left in their underwear near Place de la République, citing a police source. But there's an important point here, and one that X continually exploits time and time again. The existence of a reported incident doesn't establish the authenticity of an image supposedly showing it. Nor is an AI detection tool, or the absence of a watermark, definitive proof either way. Until the original source of this image can be established, it remains unverified and should be treated as such. It's an important reminder of how easily a genuine news report and an unverified image can become one seemingly credible story that whips up outrage and further hostility.

Today, on Jim’s birthday, we remember his courage, compassion, and belief in the dignity of every person. His legacy continues to thrive through the families, individuals freed from captivity, advocates, journalists, partners, and supporters who carry this mission forward.

Next month, we will be sharing an important new chapter in that work – and an open invitation to our entire community to join us. It started because of Jim. It continues because of you. WWW.JAMESFOLEYFOUNDATION.ORG

We're deeply concerned that the Shadow Culture Secretary appears to be arguing for an end to almost all public investment in arts & culture. A cut of this magnitude would be unprecedented and catastrophic. We've requested a full explanation of the numbers and a serious rethink.
We will cut the arts & culture budget by £1bn in order to fund 50,000 prison places. Keeping rapists and other dangerous offenders locked up is a priority for the @Conservatives. We will always put community safety first. @RichmoMusic If you need help understanding the numbers, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Always happy to talk you through. thetimes.com/article/77bcee1…

Media outlets have a duty to handle publication sensitively when it comes to a case like the tragic death of William Chapman. Social media not so much. The appalling intrusion into his family's grief is more than anyone should have to bear bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ck05…

A reminder that breaching statutory anonymity for victims and alleged victims of sexual offences can land you in jail - and crucially, does not require you to name the person, as here. Just giving enough detail to identify them is a breach
