Today is Midsummer/ St John's Day, which Welsh folklore tells us is a lucky day to be born on. If it rains, however, "nuts will spoil and wicked women will thrive." The weather forecast isn't looking great for wicked women... ☀️ #Midsummer #Wales

Let there be light! This is Bryn Celli Ddu, a neolithic burial site on Anglesey, Wales, aligned to allow the sun to reach the back of the chamber at daybreak on the Summer Solstice. May it shine bright on the longest day of the year. #SummerSolstice #folklorethursday #longestday

So, as per your votes, here is the coin to be raffled: a silver denarius minted in Rome in 89 BC, when Marius, Sulla and Cicero roamed the world. The moneyer, Lucius Tatius Sabinus, plays upon his last name by depicting the King of the Sabines, Titus Tatius on one side, and Roman men on the reverse abducting Sabine women from their husbands. This was an infamous tale so often told about the turbulent first year of Rome (753/2 BC). The coin has clearly done the rounds in many an ancient hand, but the last picture from a much better specimen gives a good idea of how it once looked. If you would like to be in the draw, on the evening of Sunday 24 September, just RT this message and the first name we draw from our followers will have it sent to them, anywhere in the world. Felix esto : good luck!

In a remarkable discovery that unfolded in Edinburgh, Scotland, a local plumber stumbled upon a piece of history hidden beneath the floorboards of an old house. As he went about his routine work, cutting through the floor to access plumbing, the unexpected glint of glass caught his eye. It wasn't long before he realized he had stumbled upon a time capsule of sorts. Carefully, the plumber retrieved the dusty bottle from its long-forgotten resting place. Inside, preserved remarkably well, was a message that had been lost to time for 135 years. The message, written on a yellowing piece of paper, was penned by an anonymous author from the late 19th century. The note unveiled a captivating glimpse into life in 19th-century Scotland, describing daily routines, the weather, and local events of that era. It read like a snapshot of a bygone time, transporting readers to a world where horse-drawn carriages were the norm, gas lamps illuminated the streets, and news traveled by word of mouth. The Note says: “James Ritchie, John Grieve, Laid this floor but they did not drink the whiskey. October 6th, 1887 Whoever finds this bottle may think our dust is blowing along the road. JRJG”

Derbyshire flora perhaps at its absolute apogee (on Longstone Edge). The background to our wildlife-rich excursion with the Buxton Field Club. We covered c500m in over two hours. Now that is what I call a proper walk: strenuous observation, minimal movement :)

Driving home the other day. Nice and quiet so a quick stand in the middle of the road phone shot. Might do it again from there on the right day
