We live in glorious time for browser progress. After so many years of stagnation, the last five or so have been incredible. Here's Sec-Fetch-Site killing the need for manual CSRF protection. Viva la web!

Bret Weinstein just said something that won’t leave my head: For the first time in 300,000 years of human evolution, we removed the cost from the single biggest reward nature ever invented — sex and pair-bonding. Reliable birth control + abortion = you can now cash the evolutionary lottery ticket without paying the 20-year mortgage of pregnancy, diapers, sleepless nights, and college funds. Result? An entire generation of 18–35-year-olds walking around with the energy, libido, hormones, and protective instincts that evolution spent millions of years calibrating for child-rearing… but with zero actual children. That energy didn’t disappear. It got redirected. Heather Heying’s observation is brutal: young women especially began treating ideologies the exact way evolution wired them to treat babies. Climate change, social justice, whatever the cause of the month is — it gets defended with literal mama-bear ferocity, the same neurochemistry that once guarded a toddler from predators now guards an abstract idea from wrong think. And now Elon is promising the second shoe is about to drop: AI-driven abundance will make money as “free” as sex became in the 1970s. Both of evolution’s primary carrots — mating and resource acquisition suddenly cost almost nothing. Weinstein’s ice-cold question: When producing and protecting actual children is no longer the central organizing principle of adult life… and when creating wealth is no longer required for status, security, or attracting a mate…What is left to give a human life direction, meaning, and structure? Are we about to become a species that invents bigger and bigger dragons to slay just to feel alive? Or do we drift into total listlessness? This 3:52 clip is genuinely haunting. Watch it all the way through, then tell me — honestly — does this explain the absolute intensity we’re seeing in culture right now, or is Bret completely missing something? Real answers only. Quote-post if it hits you in the chest like it hit me.

I consider myself a "just in time" developer. Like I have no idea how to work with sqlite databases in Python. At least not without an ORM. By the end of the day I will. Let me tell you the secret of how I do that... I read docs and play with code until it works. 🤫

Everything that has ever been written need never be written again. That is now the LLM’s job. Rejoice, for you have been liberated. Your job is to push the frontier, to write what no eyes have seen! The LLM will reproduce the past, but you must create the future!

We need to stop normalizing pump and dumps in crypto. The President of Argentina just promoted a crypto project, publicly. And a small group of insiders used that to cash out over 100 million dollars in two hours, making price collapse 97%. A classic pump and dump. The Milei administration should disclose the identities of everyone involved. All financial agreements should be made public. And the government should appoint a forensics team to map on-chain activity and identify those who benefited from it. What I guess happened is Milei was approached by an indivual who convinced him of promoting the Libra coin in exchange of financial benefits, either for himself, for Argentina, or for both. And Milei agreed without fully understanding what he was getting into, without adequate due dilligence or controls. The Libra team (seemingly led by @KIPprotocol) then launched a low effort shitcoin, which Milei promoted, sending price flying. The team and insiders then proceeded to rape investors, cashing out millions in the following two hours, making price collapse. I am Argentine and (until today) a strong Milei supporter. I had not felt this left of disgust with crypto since SBF fucked the entire industry.

I listen to old conference keynotes while working on RubyVideo. Today I listened to @yukihiro_matz's @RubyConf 2015 keynote and he talks about the lonely operator (&.) introduced in Ruby 2.3. TIL why it's called the "Lonely operator" and I think it's actually quite funny:

We need to slash back the size of the state, urgently - it is too big, too powerful, too far-reaching. I always thought it was a mess, but since being elected an MP? Far, far worse than any of us realise. Never underestimate the damage a do-gooding arrogant bureaucrat can inflict on productive Britain. There is an army of these people now, building their own little empires in councils, quangos, hospitals and public sector institutions all across the country. Entirely untouchable, accountable to nobody. Constructing this self-sustaining industry, which contributes nothing, but obstructs everything. Anyone who has dealt with the state, or those decent people working within it, will know exactly the type of individual I am referring to… Cosy work environments, zero accountability, great pensions, job security, no targets. The out of office reply in regular use... It’s a scam. These bureaucrats have embedded themselves into the system, building it so that their own little role seems irreplaceable. An overly complicated form for this, diversity training for that - who can solve it? The do-gooding bureaucrat. So wonderfully encapsulated by the thousands of diversity officers now roaming the corridors of hospitals, departments and local councils - searching for racial wrongs to right. We need to root these people out. They wouldn’t last a fortnight in the private sector, but are protected in their own cosy little bubble. All funded by the men and women doing actual work. The bureaucratic monster state must be challenged. I detest how these freeloaders are gliding through life on the back of productive Britain. Brutal cuts are required to the management class. As the great Javier Milei so eloquently says - AFUERA!

I take this seriously. Starting next year, I plan to only publicly mention (in blogs, talks, etc) L2s that are stage 1+, with *maybe a short grace period* for new genuinely interesting projects. It doesn't matter if I invested, or if you're my friend; stage 1 or bust. Multiple ZK-rollup teams have told me they're on track to be stage 1 by year end. I'm excited to see that happen! Of course we should not throw away training wheels become we're actually confident that the proof systems are secure; that would be irresponsible. But stage 1 (75% threshold on council to override the proof system, 26%+ of council must be outside the rollup team) is a very reasonable moderate milestone. The multisigs I'm in have not had a single liveness failure in years, let alone 26%. The era of rollups being glorified multisigs is coming to an end. The era of cryptographic trust is upon us.

🏋️ I made a Deadlift ETF with only companies with CEOs that lift weights or do fight sports (not just cardio) It outperforms the S&P500 by 140% or 2.4x over the last 4 years! Lifting weights = $$$
