Next time a stranger at a bar asks if you're a patriot, do not say yes. Chase Hughes walks through a hypothetical recruitment, and it starts with someone telling you he loves your podcast and then asking whether you'd consider yourself a patriot. That first yes is what he builds everything else on - your identity. Next he asks if you'd be willing to look at something that might be uncomfortable. Then he shows you your browsing history and webcam captures from your phones and computers, offers to keep it all out of the public eye, and puts $20,000 a month on the table. All you have to do is keep a few people off the show and leave a few things out, for your country. What gets me is that the protection covers more than your reputation. It also hands you a story you can live with, where every concession counts as service. "They don't build influencers. They find the ones who are already successful and recruit them." Apparently the benefits package includes getting to keep calling yourself independent. So be honest, has anybody here ever been approached with an indecent proposal?

These indonesians fires cooking the region.
ANWAR IBRAHIM

Mauritius crisis to curfew playbook: State gets water shortage ➡️people begin protesting ➡️protests grow to cost of living➡️government declared curfew. State power expand. Thanks for playing the game.
⚠️Russian tourists in Mauritius have reportedly been advised to stay in their hotels amid protests and clashes. Roads near La Gaulette and Le Morne have been affected, while whale-watching excursions have been cancelled. A nighttime curfew from 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. is in effect in some tourist areas. Hotels are also facing water shortages, with supplies potentially remaining limited until December. The unrest began amid water shortages, rising prices and public dissatisfaction. Tensions escalated after a police officer shot and seriously injured a 27-year-old woman, triggering looting, arson attacks and clashes with security forces.

Alexandr Wang on the brutal math of AI warfare: Put all 5,000 of your AIs on defense, and you still lose to an enemy running 10,000: Wang's question is simple. What happens when rival militaries turn their AIs against each other? "Can we use our AIs to sabotage their AIs?" @alexandr_wang calls it "AI on AI warfare effectively," and his answer has little to do with whose AI is smarter. "It turns into a numbers game." At the first level, Wang says, it "probably just boils down to how many copies of these AI systems do I have running versus how many copies do you have running." Here is the scenario. You run 5,000 AI copies. Your enemy runs 10,000. "Let's say it's only a 2x advantage, I have 10,000 copies running. The adversary has 5,000 copies running." The stronger side splits its force down the middle. Half goes on the attack, focused on hacking your AI "so that your AI is incapacitated or has incorrect information or is poisoned in some way." The other half never stops working on the war itself, focused on "the military planning process." Now you face an attack force the same size as your entire army. Wang explains your problem: "Again, the adversary is screwed because to properly deal with the cyber attack, I need probably all 5,000 copies to be focused on cyber defense. And then I have no capacity left to do the military planning." That is the trap. Your whole force is tied up just holding the line, while the enemy's 5,000 planners work unopposed. And a 2x gap is the mild case. "If I have 10,000 AI copies running and you only have 100 AI copies running, then I'm going to run circles. I'm still going to run circles around you." At 100 copies, you have two choices, and neither one works: "If I have them all focus on doing the military planning process, I'm gonna get hacked because I'm not doing any cyber defense. And then even if I have all of them focus on cyber defense, even those numbers are bad. It's like 100 AIs versus 5,000 AIs from you. And so I probably still get hacked." Plan, and you get hacked. Defend, and you probably still get hacked. Wang's conclusion: "So the numbers end up mattering a lot." By his logic, the side with more copies can match your entire force on offense and still keep a full force planning the war. The side with fewer copies spends everything on survival, and that may not be enough. If wars are increasingly fought by AIs, then a nation's real military strength may come down to how many copies it can run, not how many soldiers it has.

Clearly this a coordinated attack on Saudi Arabia. Why? Because 50% of Saudi defence budget is diverting to Karachi/Istanbul markets. Open Source Ai is cheaper and i speculate OpenAi is getting a spending cut from the Kingdom.
Saudi OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan has been arrested and charged in the US with allegedly installing a concealed audio recording device in an executive conference room at the company’s San Francisco offices. However, Alfozan has not been convicted of any crime, and the FBI says its investigation is ongoing.

Mario is finally walking back the word "existential".
🇸🇦🇾🇪 With Houthi missiles hitting Saudi airports and oil facilities, I've been hearing increasingly dramatic predictions about the future of the kingdom. So I wanted to hear from Ali Shihabi, who knows the Saudi leadership and advises on the NEOM project. He pushed back hard. Shihabi acknowledges that Saudi Arabia is vulnerable. It's a huge country with oil installations, pipelines and airports that are difficult to defend simultaneously. But he argues the kingdom has something the Houthis and Iran don't: the money, engineering expertise and international supply chains to repair damage and sustain a prolonged confrontation. We also disagreed about how this war began. I questioned whether Saudi Arabia's decision to bomb the runway at Sana'a airport had triggered a disastrous escalation. Shihabi insists the strike was intended to prevent Iranian military supplies from reaching the Houthis, and believes the confrontation was coming regardless. What interested me most was his position on the wider war. Despite defending Saudi Arabia's military response in Yemen, he says Riyadh opposed America's war against Iran from the beginning. “It was not a smart decision.” And while he expects a negotiated settlement with Iran, he believes MBS is determined to keep fighting the Houthis rather than accept their ability to threaten the Red Sea. It's a revealing perspective from someone close to the Saudi establishment, particularly when so many others are predicting the kingdom's defeat. @aliShihabi
