Sounds like a great story to me 😉
The 1st draft of Pizza Planet 2 is done!! It feels so amazing to have finished.
42,954 words!

Here is what the book is about. What do you think?
Have you ever made a mistake that you couldn't live down? In book 1, Leywa (a 16 year old girl) almost destroys her whole village, but she also saved it too, so why is it that people only remember the bad things she's done?
You may have felt like the village "rotten tomato" like Leywa at some point, too. In this book, she's dealing with the fact that she can never live down those mistakes she's made. Nobody will see her for the genius inventor, biologist, healer, and explorer that she is.
In fact, they want to banish her so she won't cause them any more problems … but the cheese monsters weren't even her fault!
As the pineapples rain down on them, she has to find a way to heal her sister so that everything will be put right again. Friendship Crusaders, explorers from faraway villages, and deadly plagues threaten everyone's lives and Leywa has to be the hero again.
Let's see if they call her a rotten tomato after saving the village yet again, unless she gets banished before she can!
See you there!

His talk is entitled "Throwing Rocks at Your Hero - Making the Suffering Count"
It's going to be a good one that helps you to strategically ensure the crisis you throw at your hero is believable and forces real, earned character growth.
I'm giving a Plottr demo and talking about our new FREE app, Idea Threads.
There'll also be 30+ other sessions about plotting and craft.

I'm at 32,300 words and just finished Chapter 16 of Pizza Planet 2. 🏅 Just 7 more chapters to go! 🎉
The ending is going to change a decent amount, but it's going to be so much better 💪

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

This is a disaster for the human race and I’ve really lost patience with the useless morons who can’t see that. An AI video chat that passes for human has no necessary legitimate applications. It will be used to scam old people out of their life savings. Lonely, mentally vulnerable people are going to form romantic attachments to people who aren’t real. Isolation will increase. Mental illness will skyrocket even more than it already has. Kids in grade school will have AI boyfriends and girlfriends. All of this will happen. And worse things we can’t even conceive at this point. People are already forming unhealthy emotional attachments to text-based LLMs. Once there’s an audio and visual component, it’s over. Millions of brains will be broken irreparably.
The benefits of this technology, whatever they are exactly, are so vastly outweighed by the societal catastrophe it will cause, and is already causing, that you can’t even measure the two categories on the same scale. But at least this is the best thing that ever happened to third world scammers. So if you’re in that community, congratulations.
Introducing Griffin, the first model to pass the video Turing test.
48% of people who talked to it live thought it was a real human. Previous systems have had a pass rate <3%. It is #1 on NVIDIA's benchmark for full-duplex AI video.
It’s the first Human Interaction Model (HIM).
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The 48% figure and "video Turing test" claim are from Tavus's own study of 54 one-minute calls, not independently verified or using a standard protocol. Griffin-Lite leads NVIDIA's VideoFDB benchmark on their public leaderboard.

"A morally grounded approach to AI should begin with human agency and dignity .... However capable AI becomes, it is not human intelligence and it does not possess human moral agency. We should be cautious about transferring to machines decisions that properly belong to human conscience."
[emphasis is my own]
I was honored to share my thoughts on artificial intelligence in this @diplocourier article. AI is an important topic, and it is something I feel strongly needs moral compass.
If you have a moment, I invite you to read the article, and I’d love to hear what you think.

A long overdue update about my progress on Pizza Planet 2.
I talk about how well the Story Genius steps have served me now that I'm about half-way done with the book.
I talk about all the things that have changed and the surprises that have come along the way.
I talk about the fact that now I am almost a year into this process and how I feel about that.
I also give you some advice about the next big scary stage which is editing.

Why am I speaking at an AI summit?
A few years ago we were experimenting with AI in Plottr (like everyone was … it was the way of the future, right?) but this year we announced that we realized that's a bad idea and that there will not be any AI in Plottr.
(youtube.com/shorts/_ki1Kf_t6…)
We're focusing on human-centered, human-crafted writing and I feel very strongly that AI is not good for creators. And you've responded in large numbers and loudly that you're happy with that decision.
So why then am I speaking at an AI summit?
Well let me tell you a quick story.
Infostack is doing their yearly AI Summit and I've spoken there in the past, but this time when they approached me to speak, I was trying to make it clear that I would be against what they were telling authors.
"As long as you're okay with me being the dissenting voice and telling people not to use AI as a writer, sure I'll speak," I said.
"Sure, that would be fine. It could be something like, 'I don't think you should use AI to write the book, but you could use it for other parts of the process,'" they countered.
"What if there were no 'but' in my talk? I'm sure the rest of your summit will have the 'but' so mine will just say, 'don't use AI,'" I continued.
At this point I was just trying to get them to see I'm not a good fit for their audience so leave me out.
I didn't want to speak at their summit.
They persisted.
I did an interview. 🤷♂️
I talked about the many ways AI is bad for authors, creators, the world, our brains, the economy, the next generation, etc.
I'm not even going to link to them to promote it, but in case you see it around and you see my name attached to it, just know that I haven't changed anything.
We're sticking to the NO AI promise.
Long live human-crafted storytelling!

Responding to the sophistry that “capitalism kills people too”:
People die. Without exception. Every child born is going to die. Regardless of the economic or political system, the mortality rate is eventually 100%.
We don't know when or how any healthy person is going to die. With some, the cause of death is known. With some, like the old and the ill, death does not come as a complete surprise. The poor have a higher chance of dying at every age. Droughts, storms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, avalanches, and gravity kill people randomly: in law, these are called “acts of God” and nobody is blamed or prosecuted. With massive fires, some human may be at fault, but the intent ranges from arson to accident to stupidity.
As Neville Longbottom said in the last Harry Potter, “People die every day.”
Have people died in countries with free markets? Yes.
Have free-market countries systematically killed large numbers of people? Rarely, and even more rarely for economic reasons. 🧵⬇️

If artists stopped focusing on what makes the classics "problematic" and started focusing on what makes them "classic," the public would be subjected to far less slop to watch, read, and listen to today.

Not exaggerating when I say the future depends on this catching on en masse. Kids, adults. Book clubs, silent reading groups. For the past twenty-five years tech has corroded our attention, intelligence and basic pleasure in living, and books are the key to winning them back.
Yes! 🎯
“Beyond dystopian.”
Novelist Dave Eggers is sounding the alarm about AI, which he argues is harming children’s education:
“You have a ten-year-old who is unprecedented in the history of the world. There's never been anyone like that person… To think about that one-of-a-kind-in-the-history-of-humanity person shopping their vision out to a machine, how tragic that is. That's beyond dystopian. It cannot be allowed. Not even one ounce of AI can be allowed in the humanities and youth education.”

This TED talk is great. Technoskepticism needs to be the new default. Technology is not making our world better by default.
As a mother, I would like to recommend @JonHaidt's new TED Talk "Why You Should be a Technoskeptic" to every parent navigating their kids' social media and AI use.
Although he uses the term "technoskeptic," I find him one of the most sensible tech optimists out there.
