Today Instagram had this massive exploit where hackers were just stealing rare handles left and right. Hundreds of accounts gone. People losing handles they’ve owned since 2010, some worth hundreds of thousands. I own a few rare ones so I was actually stressed watching this happen in real time, which I haven’t been in years. Obama White House account got hit. These aren’t some random new accounts, these are verified, locked down accounts and they still got compromised. The thing is the exploit is so simple it’s almost funny. Attacker goes to Forgot Password, says their account is hacked, turns on a VPN to match the target’s location (which now you can find on the about section of the page). Instagram’s AI support flow asks them to verify with a selfie. They grab a photo from the target’s profile, run it through an AI video generator to make an animation of the person’s face moving around, upload that to Meta’s AI as proof. And Meta’s AI just accepts it because it can’t tell the difference between a real selfie and an AI-generated video of someone’s face . Once verified they change the email to theirs. Password reset link goes to their email. They own it now. 2FA gets bypassed somehow in the process but honestly I don’t know exactly how, just that it did. Point is even locked down accounts went down. Then you try to recover your account and you’re talking to a chatbot that has zero ability to help. You can’t escalate to a human. You’re just stuck. Your asset is gone and there’s no one to call. The whole thing just highlighted how stupid it is to automate account security without any human in the loop. One AI fooling another AI while there’s literally no person anywhere to catch it. Meta took hours to even acknowledge it while accounts were getting stolen every minute. Now thankfully it’s patched but I don’t think it will be the last one. Stay safe!

It still blows my mind that we can create promo videos for brands in 1 hour. I recently worked with an upcoming fabric brand to integrate AI into their processes. Feeling confident in the tools, I thought, "Why not draft up a promo video with them?" I selected a few images from their website, generated more to fit the theme, and ran them through Image-2-Video in @runwayml. One hour later, we had a promo video. 🤯 A year ago, something like this would have never occurred due to the logistics and resources needed to do such a project. Now, they can put 3 creatives on a project like this, create multiple videos, and run test ads on socials to see which performs best. All in a matter of hours and days.

The iPhone camera uses computational photography, applying software to every snap. This wild photo is an eery example: the subject tries on a wedding dress and each mirror shows her in a different pose. Why? Apple insider says it’s a “mistake” in the computational photography pipeline: ➡️ “The iPhone camera doesn’t realize it was taking a photo of a mirror, so it treated the three versions of [UK actress Tessa Coates] as different people. Coates was moving when the photo was taken, so when the shutter was pressed, many differing images were captured in that instant. Apple's algorithm stitches the photos together, choosing the best versions for saturation, contrast, detail, and lack of blur.” ⬅️

Another day, another viral TikTok with incredible brand response. This woman bought a rain jacket from @thenorthface and was hiking in the rain in Australia where she complained she was absolutely soaked despite the rain jacket saying it was waterproof. Her request? Meet me at the top of the mountain and bring me a new coat. The video got 10.3M views. The team at North Face quickly replied with a video showing a guy grabbing a new jacket at the North Face store, jumping on a helicopter and bringing it to Jenn. Another example of great social listening + speed to response! This is a masterclass in turning a unsatisfied customer into millions of impressions with positive brand sentiment. Bravo @thenorthface 👏

Peak Design's response to Amazon copying their “Everyday Sling” is nothing short of genius. You can't fight Amazon in court. But you can fight them with humour.
