Near the top of Taipei 101 hangs a 728-ton steel ball. Its job: swing so the tower doesn't. When gusts push the building, the ball sways to offset it. In Typhoon Soudelor, Aug 2015, it swung over 3 ft. The world's largest tuned mass damper. Would you stand beside it?

France didn't lift the Millau Viaduct's road into the sky. It pushed it there. Crews built the deck on the plateaus at each end. Hydraulics on every pier lifted it and nudged it forward. Over and over, until the halves met on May 28, 2004. Nearly 40,000 tons, slid into place.

Stand under this dome and you'd swear it floats. It's 591 ft across. It weighs over 8,000 tons. And it rests on just 4 piers. The roof is 7,850 steel and aluminum stars, layered so the desert sun falls through in specks. Louvre Abu Dhabi, opened 2017.

Hoover Dam has 582 miles of steel pipe buried inside it. Here's why: Setting concrete gets hot. Poured in one go, engineers worked out, the dam would take 125 years to cool, and crack. So they built it in blocks, 5 ft at a time, with ice-cold water running through the pipes.

Japan built an airport on a man-made island. Then the island kept sinking. By 1990: down 27 ft. Engineers had planned for 19. The fix: the terminal stands on 900 columns, each on a hydraulic jack. Crews slide iron plates under and lift. Kansai: the airport you can jack up.

To save the Leaning Tower of Pisa, engineers dug out the ground under it. Not under the low side. Under the high side. They drilled out 1,340 cubic feet of soil, and the tower eased back. Shut in 1990. Reopened Dec 2001. 17.7 inches straighter. Still leaning, on purpose.

The world's best new skyscraper has brakes. Its steel frame stays stiff in everyday wind. In a big earthquake, clamped steel plates slide and turn the shaking into heat. Like a car braking. Guangzhou's 669 ft Sany IROOTECH tower won Best Tall Building Worldwide on Oct 28.

Germany built a wind turbine taller than the Eiffel Tower. 1,197 ft. The world's tallest, per its builder. No crane could reach the top, so it rose like a telescope: - a lattice tower outside - an inner tower winched up through it Goal: double the energy from higher winds.
